Cat pooing outside of litter tray

My cat is pooing around the house instead of the litter tray, any advice as this is very gross so need sorting immediately

Can you give some more detail, like how old is the cat and have they used the litter tray reliably in the past?

Yes reliable up till now cat is 10 months old

I would start with basics like ensuring the tray is thoroughly clean: empty it out, scrub it and put fresh litter in (just ensure there is no strong smell left from the cleaning chemicals). Make sure the area around the tray is also clean. Have you changed the litter to different brand? Is the cat well in itself? Has it had any other changes recently which might cause it stress? Also, does it poo is various places around the house or is there some sort of pattern, say under a bed or table. If it is a longhaired cat sometimes pop get stuck in the fur at the back and then falls off in inconvenient places- so they actually went in the tray in the first place.
