How to get rid of stains from cat on soft furnishings

This possibly should go on the housekeeping board but I thought you fellow cat owners might be able to help. DCat has decided that his favourite cushion on the living room couch is the lightest coloured one (of course he has). I stick the cushion cover in the washing machine regularly but it’s getting progressively more grubby looking as the months go on - the dirt (and probably oil) from his fur is getting ingrained into the fabric. I’ve tried biological washing powder and Vanish to no avail. Any suggestions, other than buying a replacement cushion cover in a different colour that hides the dirt? He’s an old man now with a variety of health problems so I’m reluctant to get rid of his favourite as I’m sure he’ll turn his nose up at any replacement but it does look pretty manky.

Just a thought, but have you tried a shampoo, pet or otherwise?
I would squirt a load on and rub it in, leaving it to soak for a few hours (or overnight) before rinsing it all out and putting in the machine.
If anything is going to get rid of oils/grease it should be that.
or maybe a soak overnight in napisan, that gets rid of some awful stains!

Thanks @ArseholierThanThougod idea. I will try shampoo. It’s been a long time since we had napisan in the house!
