Prison Dramas, Bands and Ouija Boards - the Excellent Cats audition, sing and plot

Our feline overlords have so many current strings to their joint and several bows.

Auditioning for Series One of The Prison Cat, forming a band, and continuing to plot against their enemies by means of their Ouija Boards - will they even have time to sleep now?

Just to remind you all: the competition remains open, and I've added a valuable prize now.

"The shopping he stole was:

1lb rice
Small drum curry powder
One orange
1lb minced beef

Would anyone like to guess how much this came to - it was 1972"

72 and a half new pence? I remember halfpennies.

Golly, do you?
You don't look old enough.

My heavens, there's chaos on the Strictly Come Dancing threads.

Well, not chaos - but some people are saying that we shouldn't complain about the male contestant who is using womanface.

Bollocks to that. If I want to defend women's rights on a Telly Addicts thread, I shall.

I'm going to up my original estimate to 63 and a half new pence (12 and ninepence give or take)

I think we’re all waiting with bated breath now. 63 and a half or 72 and a half… which is closer?

CatsonPollock · 17/11/2025 08:35

The Pollocks are going closer to Grumpy's first guess...with 46 new pence.

eta - we're cheap!

EmpressaurusKitty · 17/11/2025 09:16

It’s all very exciting.

KeziaOAP · 17/11/2025 09:23

68 new pence. Got married in 1972, been looking for the weekly shopping lists from that year think they must be in storage too old to go clambering in the loft🙄

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 17/11/2025 13:02

There really are times when I'd love to be a cat. 😁
Three of ours are currently luxuriating in the winter sun coming through the living room windows.

Oh Grumpy well done!

It was actually 64p but you were very, very close, so I'll send you your prize right away.

If you'll just forward me the £800 postage and packing I'll make sure you get your picture of my home made tomato soup, mounted in a black cardboard frame.

Edited to say that I clearly quoted the wrong post. That should have been Grumpy's entry.

Congrats Grumpy! Enjoy your virtual soup 🥣

How much was cat food then I wonder? Scraps from the fishmonger probably. I remember my DM getting coley (sp?) for the dog in the 60s/70s

Pianoaholic · 17/11/2025 14:58

I remember halfpennies! And £1 notes!
No further comment as to my age 😅

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 17/11/2025 15:04

And ten bob notes!

I don’t go back as far as ten bob notes but I have happy memories of buying a bagful of sweets with my 35p pocket money.

I got sixpence (which translates to 2 and a half pence).

I could get a big bag of sweets for that.

Or two bags of crisps. Unbelievable.

Penny chews….

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 17/11/2025 16:08

I'm just old enough to remember going to the shop to buy the Beano for 4d.
Nostalgia isn't what it used to be...

A large tin of cat food (which had four helpings - no pouches in those days) cost 4 and a half p.

So that's a full day of food for a cat for that price. Wow.

There was no dry cat food either, although it was beginning to come into the market in the mid 1970s.

I gave blood this afternoon & they were playing 80s music videos, which were fun, nostalgic & suitably distracting. Although the young nurse who unhooked me wasn’t very impressed with them.

Well done Grumpy enjoy your prize. Looks delicious Broon.

KeziaOAP · 17/11/2025 16:34

After getting married in 1972 we rented a cottage from a lady who'd travelled to SA for six months, on condition we looked after her cat a gorgeous ginger. Every night he'd get in the empty bath and looked at us expectantly, couldn't work out why, contacted the owner apparently her late husband always threw ping pong balls into the bath for playtime - one very happy cat🐱

I can remember old halfpennies, and thrupenny bits. When a 2 shilling piece (10p in today's money) was called a florin. Sixpence a week sweetie money (went up from thrupence when I was about 5), but we would save a little bit each week for sweets to go in the "holiday sweets box" - a box we would take on holiday each year (usually an old chocolates box) & share out each day between me & DSis.
