How to protect new carpet from cats clawing?

Hall and stairs carpet are coming under intense clawing attack by one of our young cats.

We are having to replace it as it's really old (10 yrs), grubby and getting ruffled in places, and we are going to sell the house soon.

Will the new carpet stand up to the clawing better as it's new? Or do I need to bring in some back up? We already have a scratch post upstairs, a cat tree downstairs and a scratch 'rug' down on the floor in the hall.

I need to protect the new carpet for potential buyers!

My house is filled with various scratching surfaces for the cats. I even have the wall at the top of the stairs covered in cardboard scratching blocks as well as posts, trees, and a few free standing blocks etc.

Doesn't stop Tobias scratching the stairs and upstairs hall carpet! I can only suggest you get very durable new carpeting so your cat can't wreck it completely - I gather twist pile is good for that & doesn't snag too badly. I would get a shortish pile (easier to vacuum cat hairs out of & to clean when they decide to vomit up a hairball!) and synthetic fibres tend to be more durable & easier to clean.

I'd also suggest getting something that isn't very dark or very pale as those can show the hairs more, maybe something with a mixed colour or a very subtle pattern in it?

But a twist pile carpet, not a loop pile (claws can pull at loops). Also spray any areas they scratch with felliway. A few sprays should last a couple of weeks. Just repeat when they start scratching again.

Thank you @Allergictoironing ! Luckily what you have described is pretty much what we're getting! These cats are contrary little gits aren't they 😄

I hadn't heard about the feliway trick @BatOrange so thank you I'll get some 👍

Following with interest as my 2 yr old has wrecked the bottom stair carpet despite going out and having a scratchy post.

Feliway is worth a try I will get some.
