My darling girl has died

We had to have our 11 year old cat put to sleep last week. She had end stage kidney failure. She'd had a kidney injury at the age of 2 and we were warned she'd probably only last a few more years but on a renal diet she was doing really well and naively I guess I just didn't think she'd go. I feel terrible because we'd been on holiday the week before and although we had a cat sitter coming in and a camera set up I feel if I'd been here I would have picked something was up with her sooner and maybe she could have been saved. I could tell something wasn't quite right with her the evening we got back and by the next day she went dramatically downhill and at the vet when they did her bloods they said only dialysis could have saved her.

We had a vet come out to the house to put her to sleep peacefully while we held her in our arms.

I have such an ache in my heart for her. I loved her so much. We still have her sister but the house doesn't feel right with just one cat. I've been crying every day since it happened. I can't bear the thought that I'll never see her again and I feel so guilty I wasn't with her the week before she died. The grief feels crushing.

I lost my cat at 13 at the start of covid. I like you had been away for a few days before. I came home and noticed the change in her straight away. My husband had been home and didn't notice anything different, but I knew. We took her to the vets multiple times, but she died. Luckily we were there as it was before the 1st lockdown. I don't think being at home would have made any difference with my cat or yours. Unfortunately I think things were too far gone, and cats are good at hiding illness. I was devastated when she died. She was definitely my girl. I get comfort from the fact that she was loved, had a nice life and a warm home. Hopefully in time you will feel better and remember all the good times you had.

I love this quote

He was only a cat, but human enough to be a great source of comfort.

A friend sent me this when one of our much loved cats died. Still makes me cry but the poem is so true.

The Last Battle
If it should be that I grow frail and weak
And pain should keep me from my sleep,
Then will you do what must be done,
For this — the last battle — can’t be won.
You will be sad I understand,
But don’t let grief then stay your hand,
For on this day, more than the rest,
Your love and friendship must stand the test.
We have had so many happy years,
You wouldn’t want me to suffer so.
When the time comes, please, let me go.
Take me to where to my needs they’ll tend,
Only, stay with me till the end
And hold me firm and speak to me
Until my eyes no longer see.
I know in time you will agree
It is a kindness you do to me.
Although my tail its last has waved,
From pain and suffering I have been saved.
Don’t grieve that it must be you
Who has to decide this thing to do;
We’ve been so close — we two — these years,
Don’t let your heart hold any tears.

One of my cats had a similar end - very very sudden decline while I was on holiday. Apparently its not uncommon. Dont feel guilty, she had a good life with you, she is out of pain and discomfort and she did not suffer for a long time as might have happened with a slow decline. I have my cats ashes under a rosemary bush which moves home with me when I do - so I will never forget her.

Sending you love.
