Upset the cat. How to get love back!

My big old ginger and white ball of fluff usually loves me. Cuddles in bed in the mornings etc.
Basically indoor cat with small, enclosed patio area. Terrified of vet so myself and ds decided to do flea treatment as despite not knowing how possibly could have got them suspected fleas. We messed it up and really stressed him out.
He is blaming me most. Looking at me from a distance and skitting away if I go near. Still eating food I put down. No cuddles this morning just accusing looks. I feel like a monster!!
Anything apart from time to help him forgive me?!

Mine has made it clear that he loves dad but not me, because I took him to the vet to have a tooth out, and since then I've had the temerity to give him an antibiotic tablet twice a day ( successfully, to my astonishment!) as well as a daily squirt of metacam.
While he's holding all this against me, he's discovered to his delight that eating is more comfortable than it was - but only if dad puts the food down because if I do it, it might be poisoned. I'm starting to fear I might be on the outs for good 😔

Ed so say I will go and buy cheesy dreamies tomorrow because the ones we have here aren't doing the trick!

Love the photo.

Dreamies is usually the way to go but if not working stop the treats?

I have a 3 year old that I got from cats protection 2 years ago. She still goes absolutely feral from flea and worm neck treatment. I try to be as calm as possible but she goes wild. She does soon forgive me without treats

when she first arrived we negotiated a collar for when she was first out when I was in (now taken off) but she won’t accept the treatment at all. No way could I give her tablets

you might want to sleep with one eye open tonight

Meant to say no Dreamies as he's dragging it on now.

he's planning on getting extra Dreamies for at least the next 6 months

EmeraldJeanie · 23/09/2025 21:01

He has other Dreamie slaves.
He's generally a bit of a sod with me. I'm only person in house whose ankles and toes get swiped or nipped if food not out quickly enough...

I am glad to hear this! Mine just stalked off up the garden without waiting for breakfast! He finished his antibiotics now so I'm hoping to be forgiven soon 🙏

Limit his food. That’ll do it 😎

My cat behaved like that once. She was hiding in the bushes. We took food to her and she ate it. Then one day when we came home she was on the drive. I bent to stroke her and felt a huge lump under her chin which turned out to be a huge abscess.

Animals will put up with injury. Domestic cats are no different.

Try to see if there is an injury, or may be allergic to the flea stuff.

I had a cat who could nip the back of the leg without laddering tights when hungry.

Get the drops from the vet. Happy days.

Used neck one.
I think he smells it!

He sounds like a proper Diva if that's all you did. I had visions of old school flea powder and combs 😂I'd be inclined to ignore him back till he gets over himself.

Glad to hear you got your cuddles - he’s a gorgeous boy, loved the photo!

I think sometimes they just put us in time out so we can think about our behaviour!

My childhood cat would ensure everyone could see her and then turn her back on us to sulk to make a point. My cat is much more vocal about her feelings and I will get an earful if I don’t do as I am told!

As for the flea treatment, the prescription ones although costly are usually better and I prefer to err on the side of caution with it after hearing that some of the store bought ones (but I don’t know which ones) can cause alsorts of problems in cats.

I am not sure if it will work next time you need to administer the spot on, but I found when I tried to restrain my cat in order to do it, she was NOT happy - however if I just do it quickly when she’s getting some strokes, it’s much easier. Perhaps you could catch him unawares next time?

Glad you are finally being forgiven though and you got your cuddles with your gorgeous boy!
