Cats changing sleeping places - where is the new favourite?!

Do your cats have a favourite nap spot and for a while it is absolutely the place to be?
Then they suddenly change to a new preferred location for no identifiable reason.
It’s like a holiday resort which has dropped out of fashion.
The airing cupboard is just so last year darling!

Yes - both of ours go through phases of insisting on particular chairs, the heated rack, and my laptop as the favoured sleeping place of the moment, then after a while, they move on. I think it has something to do with the instinct to avoid leaving too much of their scent in one place for predators. Obviously, that's not an issue for the average spoilt house-cat, but the instinct is still there.

Mine like to ring the changes, too. Currently, J likes sofa 1, while F likes to lie on the cushion / arm of sofa 2 which has a very soft blanket over it to protect the colour from fading in the sun.bIx know this won’t last and they’ll soon be on the move again!

Mine sleeps in the nook of my knees but now his Mrs has decided that’s HER place to sleep and she very much wears the trousers so he’s been ousted. He’s currently sulking on my OH’s dressing gown on the other side of the bed.
when I wake up, they’ll both be curled up together.
she sleeps on anybody's knee but also likes to wake me up by tickling my face with her whiskers so she can get under the duvet and snuggle into me. That’s all well and good until she sticks her claws in me when she stretches??

Our boy went through a long phase of sleeping on top of the fridge after we adopted him - I eventually put an Amazon box up there. It’s out of favour now, but I can’t bring myself to get rid of his box.

Our current routine is - morning on his cat tree by the window in the kitchen. After lunch he goes out, then likes to sleep in a cat bed by the tumble dryer in the utility until dinner. Dinner, then a wee wander out, then in the cat bed in the living room. He’ll then be in and out from 9ish until bed, when he is shut in the kitchen or he would be on my head at 4am.

Our previous girl was more of a lap cat in the evenings, and also liked to sleep on human beds. She would lie out in the flower beds on sunny days too.

I think we are weird as both cats have slept in cat beds as their “main” bed. After we had to have our beautiful girl pts last year and adopted this boy, I absolutely longed to see a cat in the (new) bed by the living room radiator - it took him a few months (and the heating coming on) but it gave me such joy to see him there! He does, of course, enjoy a laptop too.

Mine is back in his doughnut bed after spending the summer sleeping on a dining chair. It’s not a coincidence that it’s started getting colder at night.

I live alone in a three bedroom house and the old black cat sleeps on whichever bed has been changed most recently. She particularly likes fresh pillowcases (all are plain white cotton).

Mine has gone back to the fluffy blanket on the spare bed after spending the summer in the garden on one of the garden chairs. I've caught him side eyeing the kitchen radiator which is his favourite winter spot.

elliejjtiny · 23/08/2025 00:07

My cat favours the arm of ds1's chair. Although when he's at work he spreads out so his head and front paws are on the arm and the rest of him is on the seat. When the heating goes on he will sleep on the radiator. He also likes to sleep in a box of lego sometimes. Goodness knows why, it can't be comfortable.

I’m impressed that anyone has a cat who sleeps in a cat bed!

I have bought so many beautiful, temptingly comfy cat beds over the years and all have been spurned. God knows why I keep offering them.

My girl has a selection of favourite spots that she moves around as the year / her mood changes.

These include my bed (of course), under the conservatory sofa (if really hot), one of the conservatory chairs, inside the spare bedroom wardrobe, on top of a shelf I had made above the bedroom door which is accessed by a sky walkway, her tower in the living room or her window perch in the living room.
She also sunbathes stretched out on the flags in the catio.

Early morning - on the arm of the chaise, as it has the best view of the tree and birds. During the day - near wherever I am but in the shade or by the radiator depending on season. Late afternoon - sprawled on the floor of the office catching the sunbeams. Although today my boy is tucked into the cupboards under the eaves - he hoiked up a particularly large furball this morning so that's his quiet spot for recovery. I did crawl down to check on him and pet him this morning, but am leaving him to it now - that placement is a request for peace. This week finally he's come back to his spot at the end of my bed at night, after a summer of sleeping on his cool mat behind the bedroom door. I am delighted at this of course, and from now to February he'll get snugglier and allow proper cuddles, because perimenopausal me is an excellent heat source

Mine likes to sit wherever I am sitting, and miaows at me until I move.

A very discerning kitty!

Currently my bed. Im doing a lot of overtime recently so not sure if this is contributing to him wanting to be on my bed. He also has a window bed in the conservatory he favours

Mine it seems to be to do with temperature - at the moment they’re doing a lot of sleeping on the floor in various places, which I think must be because it’s cool. One of them literally sleeps in the middle of the hall, I’ve got pretty adept at stepping over him.

At night though they always sleep next to my head.

Nancywhiskers · 24/08/2025 21:01

Whenever I have have a delivery in a box, i leave the empty box for the cat, until shes finished with it. Currently her spot is the living room windowsill, first one end for a few weeks, now is at the other end.

Needanadultgapyear · 25/08/2025 09:18

We have owned this log style play tunnel for 3 years. No one has wanted anything to do with it till yesterday. Prior to this she was using a basket that I have owned for 25 years and 7 other cats have shunned.
