9 yo male neutered cat and 'sexual' behaviour worrying ...

Yes I have googled !
He has always had these episodes, even since he was spayed at about 8 months. He'll start "making biscuits" and then pull up his haunches and arch his back, making a very sexual posture. He usually does this after we have had close contact or been snoozing on top of me (he's too heavy now for me to put up with that for long ! That's how he liked to sleep when he was a little kitty)
He gets a very intense bug eyed expression, and sometimes I have woken up with him staring at me as he goes through these motions, literally a few inches from my face ! It's quite unnerving. And occasionally he will grip the senior cat by the back of his neck and cover him when he's feeling 'the heat'. I don't tell him off but he can get a bit aggressive when I tell him to get down - they both know that means to stop whatever it is - it's like he's in a kind of trance.
Of course it can't culminate in anything, and once he's off the bed he'll trot off as normal.
Can anyone offer any advice ? He's quite a timid cat - for instance would never in a million years go on his own to the ground floor (4 flights) whereas the old boy likes to pop in on the neighbours in the building 🤭 But he def has 'anxious attachment' to me.
I have been away recently, they were in a cattery where they certainly seemed to have a good time and were well cared for, I haven't asked them yet if he exhibited this at all whilst there. And I have a vid which I can show the vet next week, as actually taking him there is so traumatic for him I would prefer to told to bring him in first.
Cat Valium ?!
And I can't / won't use Feliway (never worked on a previous neurotic cat I had - rescue from abusive home)
Cat tax attached....any helpful suggestions / experience welcomed,
Thanks x

It’s common behaviour with neutered male cats, I’d just let him get on with it. Why spoil his fun?

I started a discussion on this very topic a few months ago. There were some entertaining replies.

OH thanks ! I had missed that....yes there are some very funny anecdotes ! it's a relief to know it's quite a common thing at least. Including the bug eyed stare 😳Tho' he really doesn't look like he's having "fun" by any means. I'll mention it to the vet next time I pop in there but at least I don't feel so anxious now !

It’s normal behaviour - nothing to worry about or mention to the vet.

I have a cat that does this too - it was at its worst when I was pregnant and the little porn star wouldn’t leave me alone - he’d get really cross if I told him no and tried to stop him too with this awful whine noise. I think I read somewhere it’s a territorial / stress related thing. Ironically since I’ve been divorced the behaviour has stopped!

Aintgointogoa · 26/07/2025 19:10

Thanks for reassurances! @timestheyareachanging25 they def do pick up on stress and - or can be - quite jealous. And yes that awful whine noise ! Seems you kept the right male on your life 🤭 anyway I’ve been back 3 weeks now and the ‘episodes’ are occurring much less frequently - in fact he will lie by my side in bed and accept strokes gracefully (if not, swipe incoming) without trying to mount me immediately 😝 he must have been super stressed after a month in the cattery. I feel very relieved. Thanks 🤩

As long as he’s not hurting the senior cat and isn’t too rough with him, what’s the problem? Cats are weird. It sounds like typical cat behaviour. You sound like you think he’s for the hots for you? 😂

Aintgointogoa · 26/07/2025 20:51

No he doesn’t go in ‘hard’ on the old boy 😸 besides he can more than fend for himself, the big orange chonk ! And yes it definitely feels like he has hots for me seeing as how he only ever does it in my immediate vicinity 🙈 I was worried he was having some sort of crisis but am reassured now x

PS I have had male cats most of my adult life and never come across this so…

My husband came to bed one night wanting to know why our old cat was “making love” to a slipper. 😆

RainbowZebraWarrior · 26/07/2025 21:02

My rescue boy did this when I first got him (aged 3 yrs and recently neutered) until about a year ago. The vet said it was pretty normal but could also be stress related. He was particularly fond of a squishmallow of my DDs, so I had to put it out of his reach. He's 9 next month and I am pleased it's stopped now tbh.
