Hello everyone, so our supposed to be a house cat has been desperate to go out. Crying at the door and running towards it whenever we go to open it, so we decided to see how he would get along outdoors - he's 8 months, neutered and has had injections. He only went into the next doors garden and played in the grass and laid in it whilst its been hot. Last night at about 8:30 off he went again to the neighbours grass and we heard a cat comotion, he ran back inside and since then has been hissing at us when we go to touch his stomach/pick him up. He's pretty much just wanted to be left alone. He's eaten and used the litter tray. I rang the vets but they had no appts left for today and said to call back at 9am tomorrow. I can't see any injury on the outside of him though. Any kind words to make me feel better about my poor boy😔

Oh no! It’s so distressing when you know they are out of sorts, but can’t tell you why.
My shy rescue cat (older, and I’ve had her 6 years) was attacked recently and, like yours, wanted to be left alone. Wouldn’t let me near her and I couldn’t even get her in the carrier to get her to the vets. If I went near her she went off and hid, if she was outside she was permanently sat hiding under a bush and I had to leave the door open for hours until she came in and then run and shut it. It turned out she did have a sore (not deep, but must have been painful) on the inside of her leg, so not visible to just look at her.
Im happy to say she did eventually come round and returned to her old friendly self, but it took around 2 weeks. It was so worrying and upsetting so I know how you feel.
I hope your boy turns out to be okay. Maybe he’s just had a big fright if you can’t see an injury? He’s only young and hasn’t had anything happen to him before. Hopefully he will come round and settle again soon.

Thanks for your message, i don’t think he’s walking quite right…it’s like his back legs or one of them are slightly wonky. I can’t really describe it, it looks like he’s walking differently to ease the pain. He has been back in the garden and jumped up on the wall but when he’s in the house he just wants to rest and be left poor boy x

Vets first thing. You sure he hasn't been tapped by a neighbours car or maybe kicked?

TokyoSushi · 04/07/2025 22:58

Oh no, please make sure you go to the vet asap in the morning. Hope he’s ok! (We had a fighter cat for 17 years - I get it!)

GentleSheep · 04/07/2025 23:02

They can be quite sore after a fight - my cat is unfortunately a fighter and sometimes he's just grumpy and wants to sleep. It can be difficult to find any bites in their fur, try to check and see if you can find anything. If you do bathe with some salty water if you can! Best to get him checked over.

OnTheBoardwalk · 04/07/2025 23:07

Hope he's ok, please let us know how he gets on

i've got 2 sisters who are only allowed out during the day when I’m around. I tell then they aren’t allowed out a night cos of the bad Tom cats

i sat with them during the times they were out with a water pistol for intruders when they were trying to claim their new home and territory

Last summer very hot all the windows open in our bungalow. We were awoken by a full on cat fight in our bedroom between our little girl who had leapt in followed by a bloody big Tom cat belonging to a neighbour.

Theunamedcat · 04/07/2025 23:12

Be prepared for the cat to put on a good show for the vet my cat fell hard on a dolls house roof and hurt his leg he kept lying on the heating pipes groaning lying down and howling getting up he was obviously hurt I get him to the vets he is prancing around dancing up on his back legs acting like nothing was wrong at all so she tugged on his legs found that he was resisting on one and gave him some anti inflammatory meds for a week he was absolutely fine until he did it again a few weeks later 😁 (I got rid of the dolls house)

Gingercar · 04/07/2025 23:25

I’d try not to let him outside again until you’ve been to the vets. Cats have a habit of going AWOL just when you need to set off..
Can you see any cuts? Hopefully it’s just something that stings and can be cleaned up and will heal easily. Good luck tomorrow.

He was only in the garden next door and another cat went into see who he is, next thing they had a scuffle and he ran home. He’s only been going out a couple of weeks and has only just left our garden x

He’s definitely not as up for going out as he was before, poor boy was so desperate to go out and now he’s been hurt. I can’t see anything but I don’t want to tug at him incase I make anything worse. Going to call first thing and get him checked over x

My husband shouted, swore and threw a pillow in the general direction 😂

Theunamedcat · 05/07/2025 00:34

My cat gravitated towards the warm pipes to help himself when he got injured

Doyouthinktheyknow · 05/07/2025 01:10

Our Dcat got in a fight and injured her front paw. She was very dramatic about not weight bearing at all but a shot of antibiotics and painkiller at the vets worked wonders and she was back to her usual self quickly.

I hope your Dcat is okay. There very possibly is a wound or injury that isn’t obvious. They are such a worry aren’t they!

Ours still hates every other cat on the planet so I anticipate there will be another fight eventually!

justasking111 · 05/07/2025 05:09

I was bitten by a six week feral kitten on the hand. Jakers the pain, which lasted for days. I had antibiotics for infection risk and a tetanus shot.

They’ve got really sharp teeth, I can imagine that was so sore x

Thanks everybody for your replies, rang the vet and they said because it’s not a life or death emergency they won’t give us an appt today and to monitor him over the weekend and call back Monday morning. I do think he’s hurt a leg rather than his stomach now. He’s currently sat on me doing that making biscuits and wanting plenty of kisses and head rubs x

I would bet money on it being a bite and abscess. They'll shave and treat and give pain meds and antibs.
I had 2 cats, both who were the victims for many years and on many occasions, with bites on legs/hind end that could only really be seen once shaved. Eventually, one of them started to come home with scratches on her face and the vet advised that she was now likely the aggressor.

BrieHugger · 05/07/2025 14:48

My cat is a lover not a fighter, but he has been duffed up a couple of times by the big bully over the road.

The first time it happened he was just embarrassed, didn’t want to go out, didn’t want cuddles. It wasn’t until a couple of days later we realised he had the tell tale claw scabs around his neck and shoulders where they’d been tussling. Look out for those.

The second time was a few weeks ago when he came home limping and miaowing pathetically. Typically it was the Friday night of the bank holiday weekend so the vets was closed. We think he had the equivalent of a sprained ankle / wrenched shoulder, and sure enough a couple of days of us babying him (carrying him to his bed, bringing his food to him) we could feel the tell tale scabs again. He was eating and toileting as normal but wincing a bit, but by the time the vet opened on the Tuesday he was loads better and a day or two after that was completely back to normal.
