Cat gone bald at base of tail

I have a very old (18 years) cat with kidney disease and hyperthyroidism, and now she's going bald at the base of her tail poor thing. Anyone had this before? I'll take her to the vets but wanted to ask

Our cat had this during a period of stress. She was over-washing at the base of her tail, apparently this is common according to our vet. We figured out what was causing the stress (workmen in the house) and once that was sorted the hair slowly grew back.

Best of luck with your DCat!

Fleas
hip pain
allergy
stress
woyld be the most common causes.

It's fairly common in older cats, it can be hormonal changes but it's not too concerning given your cat's age.

My cat went completely bald around the tail and bum. He didn’t have fleas. The vet told me one flea can cause an allergy then the cat is irritated by the area. He prescribed steroids to calm the inflammation.

So we saw the vet today and she said it's due to arthritic pain. She's licking her back/ tail to soothe the pain and it's making her go bald. She's on pain relief now to hopefully help

Oh bless her @Kittygonebaldy. Fingers crossed the pain meds kick in and kitty is back to normal before long.
