Anti cat “humour” on telly

Has anybody else noticed that writers of tv comedy and drama series frequently think it funny to make jokes about cats being killed, lost or hurt and to mock and stereotype cat lovers?
I have turned off so many programmes because of this.
I think there is a large element of ingrained misogyny in this too because women who love cats are often seen as lesser because they should be focusing on men and only women who can’t get a man turn to cats.
Men who love cats are seen as lesser because they clearly aren’t manly like dog owners.
Sometimes this mockery is overt rather than implied, although I have generally only seen that in American series, and of course the US vice president made his ridiculous thoughts about women who love cats very public.

You're not wrong. Don't start me on kids shows, there's very few that are cat positive. Paw patrol is dire!

Yeh I was a bit shocked by 'am I unreasonable?' Comedy. Which I loved, but v dismissive of a kid killing g two cats.

I turned that one off because the title animation shows a cat spinning in a washing machine. So I didn’t get further to see the rest thankfully.
Horrendous.

Yes, cat cruelty in "fun" is an instant switch off and never watch again for me.

EmpressaurusKitty · 09/02/2025 12:09

Fuck, really?

That makes me glad I don’t watch TV nowadays.

Gloriainextremis · 09/02/2025 13:00

I agree with you OP. Animal cruelty in any form is about as far from amusing as it can get, and cats seem to come in for particular attention in this regard.

People who think it is funny to make jokes like that are despicable imo.

I really hated the cat storyline in AIBU. It seemed really dismissive of something horrifying, like it was just a cute misdemeanour.

I don't know if it's because I'm a cat lover though that I feel so strongly. I wasn't bothered about the barbecuing a dog storyline in Peep Show.
