Siamese cats - what is the breed like?

I'm considering getting a cat of the breed in the near future.

Has anyone got any experiences pro or con that they would like to share before we decide?

Gorgeous cats. I have orientals. Big ears. Big nose.
Beautiful, huge personalities. Affectionate, but more high maintenance than your usual moggy.
They need company, can be very attached to their favourite person which makes leaving them hard. Destructive if bored.
I can't imagine not having one now. Photo of one of mine complete with huge cobwebs on big nose..

Yes definitely more high maintenance. I wouldn't like to leave them alone all day, certainly not as kittens.

If you can get two at the same time they will be great company for each other and play together.

This is my last Siamese. He reached the age of 17 when he had a stroke which paralysed his back legs. He was so loveable.

Such lovely photos. We haven’t been able to kitten view yet as my daughter brought home norovirus and we are all poorly!

Out of curiosity, those of you with black Siamese did they get born dark or was it a gradual process as they grew up?

Seeing the photo of the cat with cobwebs on his nose, you could never laugh at my childhood Siamese as he would attack and hold a grudge. The trauma is coming back in waves.

We only had a cat because the other option was a poodle and both me and my sister didn't want to take a "lamb" for walks. We never realised then that poodles came in colours other than white.

My mother only wanted a cat she knew what it wold look like through it's life because a friend had a chunky black moggy and couldn't get over it being referred to as "Mammy's handsome boy" as my mother thought he was ugly! He was an affectionate cat despite looking like a bruiser and that is why we had nasty, spoilt William.

Not sure whether OP's qn was directed at me. We have a very dark sealpoint. He started off fairly pale, but his body was dark within the year, his dad was like that, possibly darker, so we knew what to expect.

The all-brown cats are probably Havana cats.

I had two half Siamese cats some years back. One was very slender, extremely affectionate and quite chatty, the other was bit beefier, never made a sound and rather aloof.

They were a right pair though, I enjoyed having them, they were so funny at times. I still miss them.

My lilac point started out a pale cream colour as a kitten with only lightly coloured points, and has become darker as she’s got older. The points (ears, nose, paws and tail) get their colour fairly quickly as those parts cool and the enzyme that produces the colour kicks in.

The enzyme mutation also causes decreased night vision.

Oriental blacks are born black. Orientals are not Siamese they were bred from Siamese and other breeds.

Not quite right. Oriental and Siamese are the same cat. But Siamese have an albino gene that activates at higher temperatures. It's the reason Siamese are born completely white with their points developing later - the points - ears, legs, tail and nose are parts of the body that are lower in temperature. You can have Siamese and Oriental kittens in the same litter.

Annoyingly with my Siamese if he gets a hunk of fur taken away from where he is white the fur there grows back grey (he's a blue point) because it's colder and then once the grey patch grows in it slowly turns back to white once the hair is replaced in the normal hair replacement cycle.

I've had Siamese for years and years. This is my current one. We got her aged 1 and she's been the total dream. Loves me to the point she follows me everywhere, sleeps in or on the bed. Not too vocal but a little! Puts up with my daughter carrying her about and being a typical 8 year old!

I loved these books and called one of my cats Solomon - he wasn't a siamese though. So many things in those books made me laugh and sometimes cry. They definitely made me want a siamese!

LastNightMyPJsSavedMyLife · 11/02/2025 20:44

@itstrue wrong actually.

Pure Siamese to Siamese mating will produce only Siamese pointed kittens.

You can only have a mix of solid and pointed kittens in a litter if the parents have Siamese AND Oriental genes.

Orientals and Siamese are not the same. Closely related but NOT the same. HTH

The first cat I ever had as a child was half Siamese. He looked like an ordinary black and white cat but he had bags of personality and was very naughty, always up to some kind of mischief.

We got him from neighbours who owned his mother (Siamese). When he came to
live with us, we kept him in at first so he learned this was his home, but we had big French windows and his mother came and spotted him in our living room. I don’t think he was unusually young to leave his mother (all his littermates had long since left) but during the time he was kept inside and she would come and visit him every evening and they would miaow to each other through the glass. Then one day we opened the door, his mother ran to greet him in a touching reunion, then shot inside, ran up to our bathroom, and pooed on the bathmat as what felt like a very clear “F you” to us.

Siamese are velcro babies. They love affection and will want to cuddle with you all over the house. They also are more like dogs. They'll play fetch, meet you at the door when you get home, etc. Its fun to see them do this. Also, they do need another cat, preferable Siamese to have as a friend, or they get mopey.
