Why doesn't my cat want to go to bed?

At 9pm she's usually nagging us to give her her bedtime snack and go to hoomin bed so she can command the downstairs... tonight she refuses to go down and is mooning around us...

Is it because it's turned a bit colder? Or because I'm exhausted by insomnia and had planned an early night and she's being cat-contrary?

I'd make her go, but then I'd worry she wasn't feeling well...

(What is wrong with me?! It's only an animal! And yet... I can't...)

So you normally shut her out of your bedroom, yes? Is she indoors overnight?
Just not in your room?
I'd go to bed and see if she wants to snuggle in. One of mine has become cuddly these last 2 nights. Mercenary little beast just wants the hottest spot!

JawsCushion · 18/11/2024 21:20

Mine will appear shortly, then he'll start hassling me to go to bed if I try and stay up past usual time. He wants his bedtime biscuits!

Yes, she is locked in at night, but has the whole run of the downstairs... an armchair covered with fleeces where she snoozes... all facilities in the other rooms... I think you're right, it may be the colder weather... she turned 10 this year so is maybe feeling her age.

Mine is currently in destruction mode in my bedroom. He cares not for my 5am alarm.

This is her usual pattern - woe betide us if we change the routine!

...in fact, mystery solved - it was a routine issue - we bought a new heater at the weekend and it's in the room where she has her foodies. She did not authorise this change to her environment and wished to bring it to our attention... 🙄

Now we've all been down and pretended to notice it, she has toddled happily off to bed as normal...

Enslaved.

Ours is 8 and it was only last winter he started getting in bed with us in the middle of the night. He’s just started doing it again so is obviously waking up a bit cold in the early hours.

This is why we lock her out... we once had a cat who scratched half the paint off the closed bedroom door... on our vet's advice, we trained this one from a kitten. But she has spent all the time since then training us...

Aww. You've reminded me, we have kitty heating pads - time to break them out...

My 5-year-old’s recently decided that her absolute favourite napping spot is under the duvet. Bed changes get done when she’s otherwise occupied.

Do we get a picture of your cat?

JawsCushion · 18/11/2024 21:40

Mine has just appeared. Is now on my lap for cuddles until he decides that's enough and wants his snacks.

CleanShirt · 18/11/2024 21:40

I not only live in a tiny flat but he is very vocally disproving of locked doors. And he's an excellent hunter so he gets locked in at night. Basically I'll never sleep again 🤣

woffley · 18/11/2024 21:43

My cat is shut in the kitchen at night where he has his favourite bed and a cat flap. From being a kitten we have had the same routine, I get my water around 10pm and give him his dreamies. He starts asking to be put to bed at 8pm sometimes.

Yes, bed changes are done to her schedule too...

I know I owe some tax... have to get that early night now, but will try to figure out tomorrow the safest way to attach photos because I am a computer doofus... I might have one or two pictures of her somewhere... 😁

Thanks for understanding, all! 😽

Cats are funny creatures. My cats never came into bed until they got a bit older. I remember one night I couldn't find my big fluffy boy and started to panic (lived in a flat) I was literally stumped to where he could be. He had sneaked into my daughter's room (she was 2) when I put her to bed and he was cuddled in with her under the duvet. I had to remove him as her door was always closed and couldn't bare to hear him moan during the night to get out. They then gradually make their way into my bed. The girl specifically had to be under the duvet 😂

RubyMentor · 18/11/2024 21:52

This is one of my 3 cats snuggled under the duvet with me earlier this evening 😻

I agree it's probably the cold weather. Apart from keeping warm, she may be hoping to remind you to stop the snow and bring out the sun!

aesoplover · 18/11/2024 21:54

Moon phase? My cat (and kids) get weird around the fool moon

aesoplover · 18/11/2024 21:54

Obviously I mean full moon but what a typo

Theunamedcat · 18/11/2024 21:57

There’s no chance of getting these two off the bed. 10 and 7 months.

I'm loving all these gorgeous cats it's making want a cat or cats now 😊

JawsCushion · 18/11/2024 23:18

It took all day to change my bed on Sunday as my cat was asleep on it. I am fine with this. Just had to wait until he moved.

EmpressaurusKitty · 19/11/2024 05:26

Kitty wasn’t impressed that I insisted on disturbing her to take a photo.

Elton lives in a blanky tent on the big chair at this time of year. It's his desert nomad heritage!
