I've spent 6 years thinking he's in genuine sadness or distress, but I'm coming to the realisation it might just be how he sounds.

Mine definitely has 'whiny voice' in her repertoire. She knows it gets a reaction, if only because it's irritating and I will do whatever she wants, for it to stop.

My next door neighbour’s cat has a whiny voice. And he’s a big bruiser so it’s kind of funny. My own cat doesn’t have a proper meow, just one cute little noise.

TroysMammy · 17/11/2024 08:44

Mine sometimes meows with no sound and he looks pathetic when he does it. He then gets the hump because I don't know what he wants to say and of course I can't help laughing.

One of ours has a demanding whiny screech when he really wants something. It goes right through you. The screech hits just the right pitch to bother you. He also knows what he's doing because he reserves it for when he wants something i.e. treats extra food, letting outside late at night.

Boleynforsoup · 17/11/2024 08:59

Mine does. He saves it for late at night when he's just used his litter box and thinks I should get out of bed and clean up his shit right away. He also does this long whiny 'hello?' Sounding one when it's late at night and he thinks he's been left alone.

Mine does the whole 'newborn baby crying' when she slinks back through the cat flap in the very early hours.

She continues for several minutes until she arrives upstairs, secure in the knowledge her arrival has been heralded accordingly 🎶

One of mine does. It’s right up there with toddler whiny levels. Other cat has a lovely chirrup.

iloveeverykindofcat · 17/11/2024 09:36

Yeah my senior girl does. She typically only meows when she wants something, she's quite a quiet cat, but she can be happy as a clam and still sound whiny, it's just her voice.

Frenchfemme · 17/11/2024 10:14

Mine is the opposite and has a very stroppy, angry sounding, stamping her paws type of voice. After 12 years I’m finally getting used to it and accepting that’s just the way she sounds, even when she’s being really cuddly.

Breadcat is too lazy to make a noise most of the time she just looks you in the eye and mimes meowing without making a noise.
However when she does it is definitely not whiney- it is a command!

In this household, high pitched, whiny meow sounds like a bored kid at the end of the holidays who wants you to entertain him but he doesn't know what he wants. Is very persistent and very annoying. It's usually a 'play with me or I'll scratch the sofa' warning and precedes a tantrum meow if I don't pick up a feather wand asap.

'Tantrum meow' is full bodied and deep, like a husky howling at the full moon. Definitely more dog than cat. Followed by zoomies, sofa scratching and running from room to room at top speed. Is also a sign he's about to use the litter tray.

"Where are you (in the 2 bedroom flat) and why aren't you petting me" is a squeaky, short meow a bit like a bat, which from a 7kg black lump is very funny.

Coming home from work or any absence over about 6 hours I get 'frantic, desperate I thought you'd abandoned me' meows which are quite heart rending but a 5 minute cuddle using calms him down. If I'm taking to long to take off coat/put shopping in fridge/nip to the loo I get the 'cranky hurry up' meows.

He also has a meow which is unmistakeably a question - it goes up at the end! It's usually when he wants to go out the flat door to play on the landing (indoor cat so that's as far as he gets). Gets louder and more stroppy if I don't comply straight away and turns to tantrum meow if I say no.

I have NEVER had such a talkative and expressive cat before.

My parent's cat does. As does my friend's cat. Penelope just issues orders.

That's what Magic used to do.
