Cane downstairs this morning to get breakfast, my cat was down the side of the sofa which is unusual, he (lol wait for it) is always in his favourite spot by the doors. As I looked down I saw what looked like mice on the floor and freaked out. After putting my big girl pants on and looking closer… they are KITTENS. My supposedly male, neutured cat (we got him from a shelter) has had four kittens next to my sofa in the living room.
What do I do?! They are feeding, I’ve put some blankets down, left my cat to it… my cat hates beds and baskets but should I get something/a bed for them to snuggle in? Do I do anything else? I’m in absolute disbelief!!

Congratulations! Honestly though, how could a rescue charity make a mistake like this? Was it a small, local charity or a bigger organisation? Can't wait to hear how they explain an error such as this.

It’s a small local rescue. I’m going to get her thoroughly checked by the vet as she is also supposedly chipped and had all vacs, neutered, dewormed etc etc and trusted that was all correct but now I’m worried that’s not the case either!!

Should be easy to identify the father based on how different they look, so you've got a good claim for child support.

Don't forget to get all your ducks in a row. Don't let the bastard get away with it, these toms are all the same.

@SummerSplashing haha not a problem! I hadn't had mine yet either so probably could have been a bit clearer 😂

I understand that these small, local rescues do great work and so many of them are run by people trying to fit it in around earning a living and caring for families. They are life savers for so many cats and kittens. This is bonkers though! I'm not sure if the vet can tell if they're vaccinated though, so don't disturb her yet. You're right about a visit to the vet's, but for now she just needs to be left with her kittens unless it's something urgent.

Nicebloomers · 21/08/2024 09:25

Thank you for paying the tax! They are gorgeous and mummy is a pretty thing too.

sunsetsandboardwalks · 21/08/2024 09:25

If they didn't even know what sex she was I'd be wondering if she'd even seen a vet at all?

Because when ours went as kittens, the first thing the vets did was make sure they were boys or girls 🙈

SoupDragon · 21/08/2024 09:29

I really hope your cat is called something typically male like Kevin.

Seaitoverthere · 21/08/2024 09:30

Well that is a surprise and a half for a midweek morning! They are gorgeous though.

Hell of a mistake for the rescue to make and I think you are very wise to be looking at whether she is actually chipped and vaccinated a bit further down the road.

Taluulaah · 21/08/2024 09:30

Omigoodness!!! What a surprise! Um, I don’t really have any advice - it seems you have some great advice from previous posts- but I just want to say Congratulations to you and Mister New Mum Kitty-cat. 😧💗🐾 And at least you don’t have mice, you know, looking on the bright side…
Hope mum and kitties are doing good and you get sorted and figure out the best way to deal with the situation. All the best 💞

Starlight1979 · 21/08/2024 09:32

Well OP I have had an extremely shit Wednesday morning so far (and it's only 9.30am). And I don't even particularly like cats (mainly because my dogs don't allow me to like / go near them).

But this has made me smile and the photos are adorable. Congratulations 🐱💕

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 21/08/2024 09:32

Oh my gosh. "He's" absolutely beautiful too.

What a shock!

My brothers cat was called Lawrence when "he" had 3 kittens.

My mums cat William had surprise kittens.

Growlybear83 · 21/08/2024 09:33

I'm speechless that the rescue could have made such a mistake, but what a lovely surprise. They are really beautiful.

RosieFlamingo · 21/08/2024 09:37

They are the cutest 'mice' I have ever seen. I have no advice, but waiting to hear what the rescue centre says!

Papergirl1968 · 21/08/2024 09:39

Congratulations mommy cat and human grandma. They are all gorgeous.
Are you already thinking about keeping a couple of the kittens? I know I’d be tempted. 😉

Theunamedcat · 21/08/2024 09:39

How cute 😍

The rescue need to pay for a spay and any costs relating to the birth and tighten up there procedures personally I would ask for them to pay for a spay/neuter on all the kittens too along with help rehoming

No advice but I am dying of cute (also eyeing up our male, neutered rescue who came from Cats Protection in April…).

lazybrownfox · 21/08/2024 10:03

I know it's not me with the task of looking after the kittens but ❤️

😂😂😂

Everyone check your male rescue cats! You could be the next one paying the cat tax…

MissPeachyKeen · 21/08/2024 10:06

Oh what a wonderful surprise!

I mean....I know, but, I'd love this to happen to me 😄

She is so pretty & her kittens gorgeous!

Sethera · 21/08/2024 10:21

I wonder if you were given the wrong cat, OP. I.e. rescue had two very similar-looking cats, one male and neutered, one female who'd not been spayed yet, and they were put in each other's pens.

Ha! I knew there'd be a drawback to Louie the Dancing Cat.
