Erm… HELP please!!

Cane downstairs this morning to get breakfast, my cat was down the side of the sofa which is unusual, he (lol wait for it) is always in his favourite spot by the doors. As I looked down I saw what looked like mice on the floor and freaked out. After putting my big girl pants on and looking closer… they are KITTENS. My supposedly male, neutured cat (we got him from a shelter) has had four kittens next to my sofa in the living room.
What do I do?! They are feeding, I’ve put some blankets down, left my cat to it… my cat hates beds and baskets but should I get something/a bed for them to snuggle in? Do I do anything else? I’m in absolute disbelief!!

I would put 'him' and 'his' miracle children in a largish cardboard box, open at the top, but not too deep.It will prevent the kittens from escaping.

Sethera · 21/08/2024 08:23

Oh, my goodness! Definitely get her some nest materials, she may or may not use them, but give her the choice. Make sure she has plenty of food. Leave her to it if she seems OK but keep a close eye on them.

I'd be phoning the shelter as soon as you can, because something has obviously gone very wrong with their procedures and they need to know about it,

ladyintherain · 21/08/2024 08:23

Aww. I misgendered my cat too. Believed he was a girl the first few weeks I had him. The kittens will want to be close to their mum

sunsetsandboardwalks · 21/08/2024 08:24

Cardboard box and blankets - and I'd get her some kitten food too as it's higher in calories.

sunsetsandboardwalks · 21/08/2024 08:25

And congratulations! What a shock though 😂

Nicebloomers · 21/08/2024 08:32

wow! That’s a bit of a shock lol Congratulations on your new babies 😂 did your cat seem fatter or acting oddly?

Don’t do any flea treatments if you are scheduled to and make sure she has plenty of food and water available.

Please pay the cat tax with photographs!

nextdoorconundrum · 21/08/2024 08:34

Ahem ! Cat tax ? 🤔

Congratulations though.
Agree , a box with open top and high sides plus old sweater/towel for bedding.
If your new mummy cat will eat it, try and get some good quality protein in her diet, like small pieces of boiled chicken, salmon etc.

BiscuityBoyle · 21/08/2024 08:37

How long have you had your cat? Is she registered at the vet? I’d be inclined to give them a call and see if she needs checking over.

BiscuityBoyle · 21/08/2024 08:39

And yes, contact the shelter and ask them how this has happened. Mistaking male for female is one thing but you have be allowing your un-neutered cat access to the outside and now have kittens to deal with as a consequence. This is entirely the fault of the shelter. You had every reason to think that was fine.

@sunsetsandboardwalks

@Amanduh

im not going ask what sex they are 🤣🤣

sunsetsandboardwalks · 21/08/2024 08:43

@SummerSplashing no - for the mum. That's why I said "get her some kitten food" ☺️

Chemenger · 21/08/2024 08:44

Yes, kitten food is the best food for a nursing mother cat. She will eat a lot of it as well!

TokyoSushi · 21/08/2024 08:49

Well, that's quite a surprise OP!!

Here for the pictures!

Amanduh · 21/08/2024 08:55

He (she!!!) wasn’t acting strangely but was eating a lot - wasn’t really any fatter, but was very cuddly. I’m really quite cross with the shelter, they’re calling me back this morning. I honestly can’r believe it 🙈 they’re all just snuggled up in a bundle!

Erm… HELP please!!

Yes that's about the biggest mistake it possible for the shelter to make, but oh my goodness, look at them!! 🤩🤩🤩🤩

FourthEdition · 21/08/2024 08:57

Gorgeous!

Amanduh · 21/08/2024 09:00

I don’t think she can quite believe it either 😂 well, that’s a midweek morning I didn’t expect!!

I hope mum and babies all thrive OP.
I know you're (rightly) cross with the shelter but 💕

LessOfMe99 · 21/08/2024 09:04

Congratulations op! What a surprise and how wonderful 💕💕

gingercat02 · 21/08/2024 09:07

Wow! That's a right screw up by the shelter, but what gorgeous kitties and Mum dad

Unicorn34 · 21/08/2024 09:09

Congratulations...they're all beautiful! Definitely a chat with the rescue! Enjoy the fun that is inevitable when they find their feet x

KeepinOn · 21/08/2024 09:12

Oh they are SO sweet. You must be in shock, though! I hope the shelter can give you advice and support until they are old enough to find new homes.

Caaarrrl · 21/08/2024 09:15

Congratulations! Honestly though, how could a rescue charity make a mistake like this? Was it a small, local charity or a bigger organisation? Can't wait to hear how they explain an error such as this.

SoupDragon · 21/08/2024 09:19

Oh, they are just gorgeous!
