Any recommendations for an outdoor cat hut/kennel/shelter type thing?

My cat took to sleeping in the back yard ( on a bag of dried leaves) when it got hot. She likes it so much she’s been out there every night. But now it’s raining, and she’s come in crying and then insisted on going out again to get soaked like the stubborn cuss she is. Has anyone bought a kennel for a cat?

I got mine one a couple of years ago and she adores it- I’ve painted it pink for her and it has an old throw and blanket inside. It’s good peace of mine for me if I’m out all day and she’s chosen to stay outside and it starts raining! She definitely gets her use from it, so I would highly reccomend!

Ooh so a wooden one not one of those Katden things? Did you buy it (I hope so, my carpentry skills are nil)?

This is hers :) I can’t remember where I got it from but it was around £100, I think at the time I only did a relatively quick google! My carpentry skills are also nil, so thank goodness it arrived prettt much as shown, apart from I had to fix the legs on but it was really easy!

That’s super posh and a lovely picture of your cat. I might get one of those! Bonus would be it slightly resembles a cupboard she’s not allowed in to, so that ought to interest her.

Aw thank you- it was so worth the money! She loves to sit on top of it as well and survey her little kingdom! This one also has a tin foil type thing on tne roof that apparently helps keep them warm when it’s cold out.
I wasn’t sure at first how to make her realise it was hers, but put some treats in and she quickly took over! I promise I’ll stop sending pics of my cat now, but here she is relaxing inside :)

Aww she is adorable, she looks so cuddly 😍😍

Looks are deceptive, as more than one vet knows to their cost (and my lifelong embarrassment). She is very affectionate though, to us!

My dad had an old outdoor table - it was beat up, but it was tall and heavy, about waist high (I’m 5’4”).
He put it under the patio and and put a wood box on it and then cut an oval door in a cardboard box & overturned it in the wooden box. He put a a couple of old towels inside.
The cats loved it. They were outdoors but they were inside.

This has to be the worst description ever, and if you’d like a (terrible) drawing I’ll be happy to oblige. My apologies, @Renamed

I've got two of these for my cats. It's got a little overhang so it stays dry.

That one looks great

Thanks so much for all the suggestions. It’s really helpful to hear about real cats who enjoy using these things.

@DreamTheMoors thanks for the description, I’m intrigued. - when you say he put it under the patio do you mean the cat shelter was like a semi- basement?

We have a KatDen. Cat has only been seen it once, but that is because she is a strange creature who enjoys being out in vile weather.

This is my worry when I think of other things I’ve bought for her that were barely even looked at…. I think I’ll start with one of those little tents. If she likes it we’ll go for the dream home.

OP posts:
Renamed · 24/10/2024 23:34

So I got the little tent, and she loves it - too much, she insists on sleeping in it every night, which was fine until it got rainy. The tent has a mesh panel and she was coming in all wet! So as a stopgap I pegged some bubble wrap over the tent, and then got an adorable little hut… she won’t look at it. The night I tried to replace the tent with the hut there were shenanigans. So now there is a cat bender in the back yard ( 2 layers of bubble wrap over the tent, and inside a crate on its side lined with old towels) and a redundant little hut.

Sounds like you need to build a small car port over her little tent, or invest in a waterproofed marquee type structure. One where you can put a little patio table and chair too for your morning coffee when it's raining 🤔😂
