Why has my cat turned against me?

Hi I wonder if anyone can help me with this one? My little 2yr old boy cat has suddenly turned against me. I'm not doing anything differently and am still his primary carer, but he doesn't want to know me, preferring to follow my husband around devotedly. It's got to the point that if my husband leaves the house, he will cry and watch for him out of the window, even though I'm still in the room! He's not ill and is full of beans at the moment, but he just doesn't want me to cuddle or pet him at all. I know it's silly, but it's making me sad and I miss my little pal. Is this a phase, or is he just growing up into a man's man? Here he is ignoring me 😔

Just get rid of it. You can get a new one for a tenner and start again afresh.

Try treat time and interactive play with a fishing pole toy or wand. If you increase his positive experiences with you he will come around

Hmm that's interesting @Bemusedandconfusedagain - there's nothing lthat I'm aware of but one thing I am wondering about is my perfume. I've recently been sampling quite a strong fragrance that I'm not keen on so I'm wondering if he feels the same! Maybe I just don't smell right at the moment. He's also avoiding our bedroom which could be for the same reason. Agree that I probably just need to wait it out until his pea brain switches again and I am once more Queen Mummy 👑

That sounds like your answer - a cat's sense of smell is much better than a humans and some smells put them off. They also like to smell their own scent which is why they rub and nuzzle - the perfume could be overwhelming their senses and making them uncomfortable.

I looked after my boy cat for the first 8 years of his life and he was the cuddliest little softy ever. Then DP moved in and he has literally switched alligience. He watches DP's every move, does anything he can for his attention and literally falls over with his legs in the air when he gets home. He still comes to me for sneaky cuddles but he's definitely a daddy's boy now.

Play with your cat lots.

Ah no @Iamthemoom - I was wondering if it was part of him growing up. I thought boy cats usually stayed cuddly and preferred women but you are confirming my suspicions that he's out growing me 😭

I have a 20 year old boy cat, he's always favoured me, but will also sit with my husband. We both feed him. Usually they will go to who feeds them the most. They know which side their bread is buttered.
He will literally sit anywhere near me, when my husband is out the house, our cat takes on the man of the house role and when someone knocks or approaches the door he will growl to let me know. Then will relax when my husband returns home. He loves his mummy.

I'm not an expert by any means, but is your husband doing anything differently, even if you're not? If he is giving the cat more attention, that may be enough. Or your cat might just be fickle!

Clearly a joke - but where might these ten pound kittens be residing?

Asking for me, obviously.

pinneddownbytabbies · 30/06/2024 13:29

It's the perfume. Mine have take a dislike to the smell of one particular hand cream of mine, so I avoid going near them if I've used it.

SallyWD · 30/06/2024 13:50

Cats have a very strong sense of smell. There are certain creams and perfumes I wear that my cat hates. He'll avoid me if I wear them!

Lotty101 · 30/06/2024 14:52

Ah cats. I love my 2 - my older cat was very attached to me from when I got her - always slept on my bed, had her kittens on my bed!! Then when we moved house she held a grudge for 3 months for me putting her in the car - she literally wouldn’t come near me and slept on my daughter’s bed. She eventually and back to my bed but doesn’t sleep there every night now and since my OH has been around has gone back to avoiding the bedroom most nights 😩😂

DumpedByText · 30/06/2024 15:15

Sounds like he's bored of the present company and is excited to see your husband!

I'd ignore the cheeky bugger and he'll soon realise he had it good with you! 😊

Our male ( we have bro/sis ) makes no secret of the fact he really CBA with me .
He'll snake past me giving me the wide eyes like I'm holding a furriers skinning tool.

His sister loves DH and shows complete distain to everyone else .
Male adores DD , she's the only one who wears any perfume ( Sol de Janeiro ) and it hasn't put him off .

Maybe he's trying to tell me something ........?

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 30/06/2024 16:52

I have been known to try and bond with Male Cat with a tiny piece of cheese or chicken which he accepts , but I don't overstep my mark by thinking he blooody likes me !

Puppylucky · 30/06/2024 18:31

Well I can report that I'm back in favour having ditched the stinky perfume and aired the bedroom! He came for morning cuddles for the first time in weeks this morning and earlier we had a slightly unnervingly intense bit of eye to eye and nose to nose contact. He still adores my husband but at least I'm back in the game 😊
