Is my vet taking the piss ? TW

I got a new kitten, now both my cats have worms. I treated them both but called the vet the next day because I'm worried about the little one, as she's been kind of exhausted and slow to move around since I brought her home. The receptionist said I should bring them both in, in case they need a stronger treatment. It's £100 just for a double consultation, and I don't know what treatment will cost on top of that. I'm tempted to just keep them home, treat again in 2 weeks and make sure the little one is getting lots of good food to get her strength up. What do you think

OP posts:

I was told my kitten was a girl but turned out he was actually a boy!

He may just need time to settle in to his new environment. I’d definitely keep on top of worming though, and be careful about feeding - they need little and often.

BiscuityBoyle · 03/06/2024 16:08

Good news that he is ok. I think that whoever you bought him from is an arse though. Clearly didn’t give even enough of a fuck to get the kittens correctly sexed.

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 03/06/2024 16:21

Glad all is OK. I'd get pet insurance for both cats today.

Vet said the kitten is absolutely fine, and maybe just has a calm personality, was advised Panacur is fine for worming at home, and she is really a boy, but I might just keep her a girl

Glad he's OK, bet that's a relief. Hope the keeping him as a girl was a joke 😐

I wouldn't be so sure @Demonhunter

No, your vet is not taking the P*.
There has been Lucys Law for a few years now, regarding the purchase of kittens & puppies under 6 months old.
https://www.cats.org.uk/mediacentre/pressreleases/cats-protection-welcomes-lucy-s-law-to-ban-third-party-kitten-sales

Had you of got your kitten from a recognised breeder or rescue, it would not of come to you unwell.
Indeed, from a registered Charity it would have been neutered, insured, microchipped, vaccinated , treated against fleas & worms and most of all ‘fit to home’ so not unwell. All for probably less than the cost of your kitten from a random making money.

It’s not the vet taking the P* but sadly people continuing to sell, sick animals for money on gumtree, or other selling sites for money. Also people that buy from these people and expect not to have to pay vet fees to keep their animals well when things ( predictably) go wrong.

I hope your kitten is much better soon.

Lucy’s Law to ban third party kitten sales | Cats Protection

Cats Protection has welcomed a new law which will ban the commercial sale of kittens by a third party and help stamp out backstreet traders.

@BirthdayRainbow if not I hope someone had a serious chat with her about the important differences of male and female cats including neutering and the illnesses and diseases males are more prone to and can present differently! I do worry you're right considering how the cat came to be with her in the first place and seemingly little knowledge of vets and the cost of upkeep!

fetchacloth · 03/06/2024 18:32

That's a relief OP. 💐

100%.

Did OP not just mean, for example, that the kitten is named Rosie and they’re keeping the name? I see a male Rosie/Ivy/Bella/other female name at least once a week. In fact I spayed a “Miss Edward” last month.

Demonhunter · 03/06/2024 19:03

@JellySunset that would be a relief! My sons friend actually called a new kitten Lola and found out it was a boy, and parents kept the name as they thought it was quite apt (think The Kinks 🤣)

That’s what I thought as well.

Calling her kitten Miss Catherine instead of Mister Tom won’t hurt the little guy.

OP does seem somewhat inexperienced and rather naive. But she is clearly trying to be a responsible pet owner, asked for help when she wasn’t sure how to proceed and went to the vet…

JellySunset · 03/06/2024 19:13

I think that must be what they mean. So many people refer them
as their original pronouns “she’s here for her balls off” was one that made me laugh @Demonhunter

Demonhunter · 03/06/2024 19:37

@JellySunset 🤣 i imagine you do get a giggle at some names. It is so hard to determine a kittens sex though. I've been helping in cat rescue for years and lots of times we still rely on a vet to verify for us. We tend to adjust names to a male or female counterparts to save confusion. We once had a female Dave changed to Diva 🤣

OldPerson · 03/06/2024 20:55

It's worms. You know what it is.

How much do you want to pay for reassurance?

Why aren't you worming them on a regular basis anyway?

BiscuityBoyle · 03/06/2024 22:31

My beloved childhood cat (one of a very large number but she was mine, I saw her born) was a female cat with a male name. Reason was I liked the name.

Hopefully he will be neutered{Castrated} - a simple, fast and easy job that is much cheaper than a female spay .

Hope to goodness that OP hasn't males and females together unless they are spayed/castrated.

Yes I know that, I'm asking OP as she appears to be incredibly naïve

Your kitten needs a vet or there is a very, very real risk that she won't survive.

This.
A lethargic kitten is not a good sign at all.

Have you read all OP’s posts?? 🙄

VeterinaryCareAssistant · 04/06/2024 09:58

@Change2banon she's obviously read none at all.

Biddie191 · 04/06/2024 11:35

You've been sold a sick kitten, that's probably not had the correct worming, de-fleaing and nutritional needs met, who may well have any one of a number of illnesses, and you think it's the vet who is taking the piss?

BlueFlowers5 · 04/06/2024 20:36

A tiny kitten can die quickly from dehydration. Also from an infection.
Please take the sick kitten to the vets.

DisabledDemon · 04/06/2024 21:30

Please take your kitten in. Cats dehydrate incredibly quickly when they are unwell and she may need to be on a drip to counter the lethargy.
