Is my vet taking the piss ? TW

I got a new kitten, now both my cats have worms. I treated them both but called the vet the next day because I'm worried about the little one, as she's been kind of exhausted and slow to move around since I brought her home. The receptionist said I should bring them both in, in case they need a stronger treatment. It's £100 just for a double consultation, and I don't know what treatment will cost on top of that. I'm tempted to just keep them home, treat again in 2 weeks and make sure the little one is getting lots of good food to get her strength up. What do you think

In all my years of being a pet owner, I’ve found vets to be far very cautious, even more so with tiny new animals. I never been turned down for an urgent appointment. I find it shocking a vet would be given all the information about the kitten’s health and still think it’s ok to wait.

It's unbelieveable isn't it?

Our kitten was quite unwell with cat flu when he was younger and we had several urgent appointments with him - we were always seen the same day, normally within the hour - even at weekends.

When we got our puppy, he was riddled with fleas and worms. I took him straight to the vet when we picked him up because of the horrendous conditions of the place he lived. He was scabby on his neck from itching, it was awful.

They gave me panacur paste or something like that, which I have since found out can be purchased from Pets at Home for £7.50! www.petsathome.com/product/panacur-worming-paste-18-75-percent-for-cats-kittens-dogs-and-puppies-5g/20990P?productId=20990&purchaseType=one-time&size=5g

They also gave me a 3 day course of flea killing tablets which cost £25 and turns out I could have got them from PAH for £15! But I was lucky and didn't have to pay a consultation fee as I took him straight from the house as I was concerned. He had absolutely no checks before we got him so i booked him in for that there and then. We've had him just over 2 weeks now and he's had his vet check, chipped, first set of vaccinations, no more fleas or worms. The vet said he's a healthy happy pup. I'm sure the people we got him from were puppy farmers so as soon as we got home, we reported them to rspca because no animals deserve to live like that. Thankfully all the puppies went quickly so they were all saved but they had 5 other dogs.

Not 'saved' SOLD to fund the puppy farm.

There I've corrected it for you.

Don't forget, if she survives, to get her microchipped.

I told my vet receptionist that my cat had been eating less than normal and did she need seeing. They said yes. I took her straight in. Are you really telling us no vet thinks this kitten needs seeing today?

Or was it like when my other cat had been beaten up and had a cut ear, clean him up call us back if anything else changes as it sounds like this can be managed at home (Sunday night call).

"All vets take the piss …. Don’t care what anyone else says - I haven’t met a vet that doesn’t think about the money first ..pet after."

Hmm, the only clients we insist on money first pet after" for everything* are the really hard case bad debtors. Everyone else gets consult first, pay at the desk after (although with the known desk-dodgers and complainers we are extra sure to estimate right down to the nearest 50p before we so much as pick up a syringe and show them to the desk on the way out). On admission for procedures, the known good payers can pay on collection of the pet after. Unknowns pay a deposit.

*obviously if something gets rushed in the door having been freshly run over or something like that, we'll triage it, get an IV line in (well we're going to need it one way or another...) and get some good pain relief in before we get down to the brass tacks of finances

You said you’re responding to people who were nice to you. I offered to take her to the vet but you didn’t respond to me. I genuinely would have done.

You also said you didn’t trust the vet so wanted to reach out to cat owners. You’ve had so much advice to take her to the vet straight away, but you seem to have ignored it?

im literally preying your kitten survives.

Not 'saved' SOLD to fund the puppy farm.

There I've corrected it for you.

It's so frustrating that people think they are ''Saving'' a puppy farmed animal {Puppy or Kitten} from these shit pits.

All they are doing is FUNDING them, playing in to the hands of these shysters.

NEVER buy an animal from an online advert.

Either go through a bona fide rescue, or breed club, where you will be grilled {as you should be} as to your suitability to own an animal.

Every sickly wormy puppy or kitten purchased by a gullible impulse buyer is like manna from heaven to the animal farmers.

Report it to the RSPCA.

Giving money to these callous people in the very mistaken belief that you are ''Rescuing'' an animal is wrong.

You are perpetuating a cruel and miserable trade.

"the grotesque profiteering by the ''Groups'' that is so scandalous.It'sonopoly.
Even my lovely small independent has been taken over.
{Experienced vet, recently retired...she used to say how she kept her prices fair ''As she liked to sleep at night''.}"

She wasn't too principled to take the corporate dollar when she sold up though was she? 😆

It's been taken over by a smaller local group Not one of the corporate ones- obviously I'm not going to mention it, but the main 'group' was going years ago for large animals. She still owns the building.

AllTheChaos · 03/06/2024 01:00

I hesitate to say this, but I wonder if the vet has concluded that either the kitten has a minor issue, in which case not seeing it till Monday is fine, or that it sounds so ill that it will need to be put down, which it sounds like op wouldn’t want to pay for if the kitten would die on its own in a few days anyway? Is this really mean to say? I was talking about this situation to a friend, and this was their take. It shocked me but also made me wonder if that might be the case?

HeadacheEarthquake · 03/06/2024 12:42

Hows the kitten then?

sharplettuce · 03/06/2024 12:53

@HeadacheEarthquake She seems like she might be doing better, she has come seeking out affection from me for the first time since I got her, and her tummy seems to have went down a bit, but she still seems tired. Her vet appointment is soon

LittleMissSleepyUK · 03/06/2024 12:58

Hope it goes ok at the vets

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 03/06/2024 13:00

Do not cancel the vet appointment just because you think she seems to be doing a bit better.

Thelnebriati · 03/06/2024 13:04

I agree - she might be tired but she could be anaemic.

Yes

Might have seemed a daft question, but a relative’s puppy was very sickly, turns out she was feeding it adult food as it was cheaper 🤷🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️
What time is your vet appointment?

AlaskaThunderfuckHiiiiiiiii · 03/06/2024 13:44

Hopefully nothing serious OP

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 03/06/2024 15:35

How did you get on at the vet, OP?

sharplettuce · 03/06/2024 16:05

Vet said the kitten is absolutely fine, and maybe just has a calm personality, was advised Panacur is fine for worming at home, and she is really a boy, but I might just keep her a girl
