Is my vet taking the piss ? TW

I got a new kitten, now both my cats have worms. I treated them both but called the vet the next day because I'm worried about the little one, as she's been kind of exhausted and slow to move around since I brought her home. The receptionist said I should bring them both in, in case they need a stronger treatment. It's £100 just for a double consultation, and I don't know what treatment will cost on top of that. I'm tempted to just keep them home, treat again in 2 weeks and make sure the little one is getting lots of good food to get her strength up. What do you think

I love my cats, and I am going to the vet, I said this 10 pages ago

Tomorrow. The symptoms you’ve listed are serious. If you WERE worried you’d go to an emergency vet now

What I took from that was the OP was asking whether people thought it was necessary to take her older cat to the vet just because the new one had worms.

That's fair, the thread descended into a bit of a pile on. Honestly the breeder scumbags who sell sick animals are far worse people than those who get stung buying them. The OP didn't actually say she wasn't going to the vets tomorrow, but did keep asking questions about dosages, so wasn't sure what was happening. Glad the kitten is seeing a vet tomorrow, hopefully it's something treatable and the bill isn't too bad.

Sadly these 'breeders' (I'm using the term very loosely) only exist because there's an endless queue of people just like OP who keep buying from them in spite of all the advice not to buy from them. All the traders care about is money and all the buyers want is an instant pet without having to wait. It's utterly depressing.

What enrages me - as a serial adopter of dogs from rescue charities (and we always take older dogs that nobody else seems to want) - is that cat rescues are similarly full of cats. But because people prefer kittens and they're harder to find at rescues, they buy from these despicable online ads.

There's been so much publicity about these sick kittens and puppies being sold in this way - I really don't understand the OP's naivety about it.

The Op has contacted the vet and told them what is wrong with the kitten/ it’s symptoms and the vet have told her that it isn’t an emergency and to take the kitten in tomorrow. The kitten is drinking and eating fine. You’re all acting like the kitten is dragging itself helplessly across the floor. This is just an assumption on everyone who is freaking out’s part. The kitten sounds like it has worms and is a bit tired. No doubt that the kitten should see a vet but it isn’t an emergency and no need to be horrible to someone who is clearly concerned about their new pet.

If she was that concerned about her new arrival she wouldn't be posting about it on here and questioning the vet costs.

You do whatever you need to do for your animal.

Haven't RTFT but my brother's kitten was poorly last weekend and he went on a website called JustAnswer and spoke to a vet really quickly. They were based in the UK. He sent them a photo of the poo and a video of the kitten.

Obviously not a replacement for seeing a vet, but they gave some really good advice and kitten is back to normal. I just got a photo of her playing with her new toy!

Treating the kitten again today without vet advice could be fatal.

How so?

fieldsofbutterflies · 02/06/2024 11:17

PrincessTeaSet · 02/06/2024 11:15

Because OP hasn't weighed the kitten properly and gave it a random dose of a supermarket wormer. If you dose again within too short a period, you could cause an overdose which can kill.

I bought it from the petshop and I know she isn't under 1kg

Just another reason I prefer buying kittens from breeders, buying a moggy kitten should be looked down on to discourage people who have no idea about breeding from producing kittens/letting their entire female outside. By the time you pay for worming, flea treatment, both sets of vaccinations and a microchip you could have bought a carefully bred, selected for temperament pedigree cat. Not to mention if something like this happens. So much suffering so someone can have a cheap kitten, the poor thing should be enjoying life and being a kitten not having repeated vet trips and a poorly tummy.

Your kitten will probably be fine until tomorrow if the vets are unconcerned, definitely don't leave it longer though kittens should be full of beans not moping around.

Jaxhog · 02/06/2024 11:26

They're kittens and new to you. I'd take them to the vet even if they were fine, just to be sure they get a full checkup. I suspect you can't insurance until you do this anyway.

skyeisthelimit · 02/06/2024 11:26

OP< I would recommend getting the wormer from the vet as they will give you stronger stuff that you can only get on prescription. Our vets insist you take them in once a year, and then you can buy it for a year without being seen. It is a pain, but worth it to get the good stuff.

Having said that, I have recently been using Drontal and that seems to work ok. The cheaper stuff never works.

If you were a serious animal lover you wouldn't be questioning the vets fees and go today instead of tomorrow.

You do whatever you need to do for your loved one.

@sharplettuce

I think the reason that you are getting so much hate on here is because people are imagining that you have a dying kitten beside you barely moving “lethargic and listless” and needs urgent medical care and you’re just naively looking at a dying kitten not knowing what to do. I don’t know where that image has came from but that isn’t my impression at all. Maybe your kitten is actually on deaths door and you are actually neglecting it? I just think that’s a big assumption to make. Maybe you could you put everyone’s mind at ease and explain what your kitten is doing just now ? Is she on death’s door?

No ! She is having a nap now, but has been playing with my other cat for a while today. What I mean to come across is I have noticed her behaviour isn't active like he was at that age, she just seems weak for what I think a kitten should be like

Can you take the cat to the vet today?
Why are you ignoring everyone for saying that?

Why were you questioning the vet fees? You would do anything for a loved one.

Because I have spoke to the vets and they said to bring them tomorrow, that's the appointment time

If you were that concerned about the poor cat you would take them today.

Why would you question the vet fees? You know how much vets cost. If you cannot factor that in you shouldn't have 2 (or 3??) cats!
I have one. I couldn't afford another. Double the vets bills. Food bills.

It's because she's ignoring all the advice she doesn't like, instead concentrating on the ones who back up her views that she's doing the right thing.

I'd be on the phone to the vet today even if it's just to put my mind at ease. They are used to over protective/anxious owners. But I'd also be telling them that she seems slow and listless.

My cat was also from a rescue centre. I would NEVER go to a breeder. The poor mum cat would be a money making machine for her poor babies.
