We have a "cat" room but currently in the process of getting our house ready to sell. Neither of my cats can use lidded cat litter boxes, so the litter is just freely visible.

Purchased an ercol oak unit yesterday for £40 in a weird mahogany type colour and spending today sprucing it up. Hubby tore the sides out and made a "lip" at the bottom to try and better contain cat litter after they kick and thrash about in there, but it got me wondering what people use and what other people's set ups are. I remember seeing a potted plant style box a while back but would need at least 2 trays and didn't fancy paying the price tag for 2. Show me your set ups!

We have ours in the garage with a cat flap in the wall from the hall so probably not much help for you.

I can’t believe you butchered an ercol unit 😱. Ikea yes, but ercol is worth lots second hand

Toddlerteaplease · 08/04/2024 09:19

I'm also slightly horrified that you butchered a piece of Ercol. 😂

Yemelade · 08/04/2024 10:46

Such a typical mumsnet outcome 😂 to end up focussing on the one piece of info that wasn't the main purpose of the thread!

If it makes you both feel better, it can be changed back quite easily. And it was already "butchered" with paint in the shade of poo mixed with mahogany wood oil taking away every bit of intricate detail from it. We've now sanded it back and revealed the smaller (nicer) details. It was up for sale on market place for several weeks before we purchased and we only picked it up for cheap as it was headed to landfill. It also matches other furniture around our home as well of our furniture is second hand of the same time period. Feeling any better now? "Butchered" is such a funny term for repurposing an otherwise sad piece of furniture destined for the tip!

@Yemelade 😂 have you got a picture of it. I'm intrigued to see it. I would never have the imagination or skills to do something like that.

It's been stripped back now so you can't see what the details looked like but they were pretty clogged up. The sides also didn't quite match and seemed to be painted brown. Also, broken door that didn't fully close but husband has now fixed!

We've sanded the tops totally down back to oak and will be applying beeswax. The bottom 2 squares on the sides have been removed for cat litter tray access. This weekend we hope to paint the cabinetry. Will update when it's done!

Forgot to post an update. We have noticed some paint runs here and there and some bits of paint that managed to get onto the wood surfaces but overall we are happy. Contains smelly and hides trays, wipes, bags, cat litter etc well ☺️

Looks great! Makes me want to get some kind of cabinet.

QueryA · 09/05/2024 19:51

you were right, that isn’t a piece of ercol that was worth treasuring. Apologies. Looks good now though and an ingenious litter box.

This is absolutely brilliant! 🤩 I’ve now decided I am going to do this. I always struggle with where to put the litter boxes

ScottBakula · 10/05/2024 22:11

That looks really good @Yemelade

@Dancingfairydreams is it just me or does that cat look really pissed off at been photed during his 'private ' time 😁

Yemelade · 12/05/2024 07:14

Thanks for the comments all. We're pleased with it! It did take a while to paint as we used chalk paint and it needed 4 coats as it was watery but I think it was worth it.

Same here! It looks great.

That's a really clever idea. I don't have a cat so I don't know why I clicked on this really but if I did I would totally steal this!
