Shortage of cat flu vaccinations

Pets at home vet say they can’t get hold of the annual vaccination for my cats because the manufacturer is not making them. Anyone else had this? I pay for a monthly plan that includes this annual jab and cats are outdoor cats - I am worried they’ll catch the flu. Not sure if there’s anything I can do?

I work at a vets. There is a huge manufacturing delay with cat vaccine right now. Most vets will have a small allocation from their reps. We are just doing kitten vaccines at the moment. I have no idea when this will end.

These vaccine shortages have been happening off and on for years now. It's very frustrating. It doesn't help that when boosters need to be delayed significantly second vaccines are needed meaning the demand for the vaccines is even higher!

Thank you for replying. Is it safe to let them go outside? They should have had their vaccines 2 months ago.

Unfortunately cat flu and enteritis can both be carried on clothing etc so house cats are also at risk. FeLV is also vaccinated against but that does need cats to come into direct contact with an infected cat so keeping them in would protect against this one. Most drug companies will allow a little leeway with booster vaccination (usually about 3 months over) before they expect immunity to lapse enough for a restart - although this is "off licence". Have a chat with your vets OP - they can talk to you in more detail about your individual cat's risk factors etc. Fingers crossed there are enough vaccines to meet demand soon
