Daughter scared of new cat?

So we got out first cat yesterday from a shelter. He's a unique looking boy, he's all black long haired with piercing yellow eyes. My youngest picked him, got him home my eldest 17 btw was scared of him. She went to her room and won't come out.

Now she's not scared of cats per se, my youngest has befriended every cat in the estate and has had them in out house feeding them and while my eldest wasn't a lover as such she never bothered with them and the cats never bothered with her.

This guy is also the friendly clingy type, so as I say it's more the look of him I guess he looks naturally cross I guess lol.

Any been in this position really don't want to take him back and I know a fallout will develop if I do.

He's gorgeous. I think she's just annoyed something else is the centre of attention.

Paw2024 · 04/02/2024 10:25

Oh he's gorgeous
Tell her I have had two black male cats and they've both been the softest most affectionate
This is my boy

Black cats are the best BTW. We have two and an orange kitten. I call them the voids!

She was after a dog, one of them big bully dogs too, we rent out house, landlord was fine with a cat not a big dog so I think this is all playing into it too.

She didn't get her own way so now she's sulking. I'd just let her sulk and ignore her. The cat is so lovely.😻

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 04/02/2024 10:54

I expect she's attention seeking. I'd ignore for a while too. Completely down play it.

ToffeeShocker · 04/02/2024 10:57

She wanted a big bully dog but she’s scared of a little cat? 🤨

Loving the voids and the little ginger kitty 🤗

Express0 · 04/02/2024 10:57

She’s being pathetic.

Cybergirlclair81 · 04/02/2024 11:32

Thanks for all the advice guys and lovely pics of your cats, my daughter also has that lurgy that's going around so she can't be bothered with anyone or anything at the min anyway which is probably playing into it too.

I'll give it all a few days, hopefully it sorts itself out.

Thanks @ToffeeShocker - the voids are surprisingly tolerant of the insane orange ratbag 😂

ginasevern · 04/02/2024 11:38

Your new fellow is lovely, and well done for rescuing him. I first thought your daugher was 17 months old and the cat perhaps looked like the Beast of Bodmin.

Is there any chance she could be jealous of the youngest's cat whispering abilities? Teenagers are a pain the in arse and jealousy in this situation is quite possible even though it sounds daft.

Ibizafun · 04/02/2024 11:57

That's a very cute looking beastGrin

Are neurotypical teens not allowed to be scared of a cat?

OP I would give it some time for both DD and the cat to settle. It's all very new just now and it might just need time.

I wouldn't make any 'get over it comments' or try to bring them together, leave it low key and see how things progress

Some people can have a phobia yes, and sympathies to anyone who does, but after 17 years, the OP would have known that her dd had ailurophobia.

Sounds much more like teenagernotgettingherownwaysohasgoneoffinastropitis to me.

Cybergirlclair81 · 04/02/2024 13:57

Could well be and yep they can be a right pain. Hoping it'll all blow over tbh.

He''s beautiful. I love black cats.

AliceMcK · 05/02/2024 01:49

I’m 48yo and have nightmares about cats.

my 11yo also got bitten by a cat last week. She has allergies so dosnt go near them, however at a friends house the cat took offence to my dd ignoring her and bit her. The mum said, I yeah she dose that. Exactly why I fucking hate them, if a dog bit a child there would be uproar, but a cat, it’s o well.

Toddlerteaplease · 05/02/2024 07:42

He's beautiful, your daughter is being ridiculous.

Toddlerteaplease · 05/02/2024 07:43

I thought you were going to say your daughter was very young, which would be understandable, but not 17!

donteatthedaisies0 · 05/02/2024 07:47

Some people just aren't cat people and your daughter is one .

ToffeeShocker · 20/02/2024 15:07

How’s your little kitty getting on @Cybergirlclair81 ? Has your DD come round yet?

Yeah all is great, she's realised the cat isn't a Puma and won't maul her lol, he's a big softie. He's a long haired cat so needs brushed and she actually brushed him the other day, cat was as unconcerned.

Oh that’s great news.

Doyouthinktheyknow · 20/02/2024 21:17

Loving all the black cat pics😻

Teens are odd creatures, my dses weren’t sure about Dcat when we got her, she is now a firm favorite with them both, she spends the afternoons on DS2’s bed and DS2 looks after her when we go away. DS1 at university looks forward to coming home to see dcat and the washing being done in that order🤣
