Litter tray - where do you keep yours?

We have two cats, aged 8 and 7. The younger has developed some mysterious skin condition which may be an allergy so he’s had to become a house cat. The older girl was almost a house cat anyway so she’s not bothered about being kept in. Obviously this means that we now have two well used litter trays, but I’m absolutely fed up of not having them tucked away somewhere discreet. We don’t live in a massive house with loads of storage space so they’ve ended up by the back door in the kitchen, which I really don’t like.

Where do your litter trays live and how are they not an unintentional feature of the house?

One in each reception room, one in the spare room upstairs, one in the office. No space in my tiny bathroom. 2 indoor cats.

MermaidEyes · 02/02/2024 08:56

@Brawcolli we have one, it's brilliant. Painted grey so looks nice and you can put things on top so storage space too. Cats love it and it definitely helps with the smells 💩

A cabinet thing? What is this magic - please tell me more!

Ours is like this but grey amzn.eu/d/62O19R9

In the bathroom here. But she lives upstairs so it works

Caspianberg · 02/02/2024 11:46

In a cabinet under bathroom sink. It has a hole cut on one side, the hidden side so you can’t see it.
Our don’t even use it now, but I have left a clean on there Incase they had to be shut in an emergency and it’s not at all visible.

In your case I would get a long low unit for under stairs and cut out end hole also. Opening doors to change and clean.

Ingenious! That’s a better version of what I’d seen as a hack with the ikea box.

I think this is probably the most sensible. I’ve got a shoe storage unit under there now so that could go and DH could get his DIY fix…

Wow 🤩 that’s amazing!

My back door is part of a large vestibule area and it's in there, in a proper cat litter tray cupboard with a litter mat. The door to the living room is always closed as the pet food bags are kept there too. I trained her to use a cat flap at 7 y/o. No smell at all.

learieonthewildmoor · 05/02/2024 14:22

We have the three boxes in the laundry/utility room. I read that you should have them all spread out around the house and have one in your living room, but I really prefer them in one spot out of the way.

WinterLobelia · 05/02/2024 14:24

We are lucky enough to have a second bathroom upstairs that is rarely used (because the shower is broken) and we keep the trays there.

Before this we kept it in what was grandly called the utility room but was actually a cupboard under the stairs.

Lavender14 · 05/02/2024 14:27

We have a box room and our litter tray is currently in there. Before that, in an old house, it was in my bathroom between the toilet and the sink. That actually worked really well because I passed it more often and just kept a dustpan and brush to hand beside it so I could sweep up any litter that got tracked out as it happened.

We've always had several cats and have only ever had one litter tray, in the utility room. All cats have been fine with it and perfectly happy. For most people I would imagine it's totally impractical to have more than one.

We only have 1 cat. But we have 3 boxes! He was ill when we got home and kept going to these 3 spots to popp and as he can smell it even though I have done everything googlwable to get Rid of his scent. He always goes there. So gave up and put boxes there instead. One by the back door dining room. One in the kitchen and one I'm the utility room type room. I don't like them but better than crao on the floor!

When boy cat first had to stay in, he’d always go on the dining room floor (luckily it’s wood) so we had a tray in there for a while. It got moved just before Christmas as we had people over and he’s since been using it in the kitchen since.

I could put a small tray in the upstairs bathroom but neither cat has ever toileted upstairs. I might move one tray into the downstairs loo so the kitchen one is easier to conceal.

Still hasn’t solved the mystery skin condition but that’s another problem…

In the utility room by the back door. It's also been in their room (spare room) if I shut them off from the downstairs whilst kids are playing I'll put litter tray under the stairs (it's open there's no cupboard)

AlltheFs · 05/02/2024 20:36

Upstairs in the tiny landing, in the small hallway and in the dining room.

We have a small cottage and 2 kittens. The litter trays are not hidden at all. It’s mildly irritating but part of having cats. I find it less annoying than the fecking dry cat food that they spill everywhere.

MidnightMeltdown · 05/02/2024 20:43

Kitchen, but they always do their number twos outside so it doesn't smell.

AlltheFs · 05/02/2024 20:59

@BabbleBee have you tried a Feliway plug in for the skin complaint? One of ours in the past had something mysterious which must have been stress related as the Feliway solved it (and when we forgot to replace it some it would come back so it wasn’t just snake oil-actually worked).

PhoenixStarbeamer · 05/02/2024 21:10

My 2 share 1 tray. Never had any issues. It's in the corner in the kitchen.

Totally agree. Someone told me I should have 3 litter trays I nearly spat out my tea. Mine are 14 and 7 and have never had any issue sharing 1.

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 05/02/2024 21:19

@PhoenixStarbeamer I have 5 cats. No way am I having 6 litter trays! I would have to but nextdoor and literally have a cat house. One upstairs and one downstairs, they are big but plenty for the spoilt darlings.

BabbleBee · 05/02/2024 21:37

I only ever had one tray when they were both going outside during the day, and that was hardly used overnight when they were kept in. Since having to stay indoors, boy cat was not using the same litter tray as girl cat for poo, but would for wee. He’d be literally shitting himself in the dining room rather than going properly. We then put a second tray in the dining room and he’s been fine ever since. Girl cat will use whatever litter tray wherever it is, always has done. She’ll go outside for 2 minutes then come in and use the litter tray.

@AlltheFs I think we did at the beginning, but can’t remember for sure now. We’ve had one for times when we’ve been away and had a cat sitter come in so I know I’ve got a unit somewhere! It’s a good idea though and I’ll try it. He’s had so many steroid injections and days of oral steroids (not at the same time) that it can’t be good for him. Vet has suggested an autoimmune disease but the tests are extremely expensive for a maybe! I’m convinced it’s something to do with the housing development that’s gone up behind us, he was fine before that.
