Litter tray - where do you keep yours?

We have two cats, aged 8 and 7. The younger has developed some mysterious skin condition which may be an allergy so he’s had to become a house cat. The older girl was almost a house cat anyway so she’s not bothered about being kept in. Obviously this means that we now have two well used litter trays, but I’m absolutely fed up of not having them tucked away somewhere discreet. We don’t live in a massive house with loads of storage space so they’ve ended up by the back door in the kitchen, which I really don’t like.

Where do your litter trays live and how are they not an unintentional feature of the house?

Mine don't have a tray now but when I had an elderly cat we had it in the bathroom next to the toilet. It seemed the most hygienic place to have it. My SIL has one in the living room and my mother had one next to the cooker...

Mine is at the far end of the kitchen, under a window by the rubbish bin and well away from all surfaces, food cupboards etc. I don't really notice it (it's also a covered one).

downstairs toilet

Marblessolveeverything · 01/02/2024 13:58

Ensuite of "their" room. Emptied daily and washed daily.

In the bathroom, I'm in a flat. It's quite funny having a queue for the bathroom sometimes!

Understairs cupboard, our stairs go across the house rather than straight up so we can leave the door slightly ajar without it being in the way. If we wanted to keep it closed we could put a catflap on it.

Clarich007 · 01/02/2024 14:21

Hi.
Ours is also by the back door in the kitchen I'm lucky that I have a large L shaped dining kitchen, but still don't like having having it there.

Shadowssang · 01/02/2024 14:22

Guest bedroom. It was in the kitchen for a while but that seemed unhygienic. Not room for it inthe bathroom.

HippyChickMama · 01/02/2024 14:38

We have two covered trays, one between kitchen and dining room but tucked between fridge freezer and a column in an alcove space, the other is in the utility room. Both have litter catching mats in front of them, we use liners and do a complete litter change for both every other day

Kitchen. Bit gross really but I like it being next to the window and bin.

Bathroom would be the alternative but it's upstairs and I'd have to haul the cat litter up and down, and I don't think she would like using it in there when I have visitors.

I'd love to see that, your cat banging on the door and shouting "what are you doing in there, writing your memoirs? I'm crossing my paws out here..." 😾

mathanxiety · 01/02/2024 15:58

I'm lucky enough to have a little alcove in the hallway near the bathroom door where it fits.

MermaidEyes · 01/02/2024 15:58

Ours is in the kitchen but we have one of those wooden cabinets it sits inside, so it's nicely hidden. On top we have a squishy cat bed.

Octavia64 · 01/02/2024 15:59

My en-suite.

I did try and move it to the utility room but they hate the washing machine so it was not a success.

DancingOnMoonbeams · 01/02/2024 16:00

The bathroom.

Deliadidit · 01/02/2024 16:00

Downstairs toilet here too - Don’t think that I could cope with it in the kitchen and hallway because of the smell.

TheMerryBandofPanderingShitwits · 01/02/2024 16:03

By the back door in the utility room. And one in the corner of my bedroom for the very elderly cat, where she'd piss at least twice a day before we put the litter tray over it.

I saw a Tiktok of a planter/litter tray combo the other day https://amzn.eu/d/ddjLE41 which is very pricey - but there's loads of Ikea litter tray hacks if you want a cheaper disguised option.

SnowsFalling · 01/02/2024 16:04

Next to the bin.
We don't have a tumble drier, so both are in the empty hole that exists for a drier!

Purplecatshopaholic · 01/02/2024 16:07

In the garage (cat flap from the kitchen). Another in my study (just keep the door ajar). Going to put one in my hall cupboard with a cat flap too.

BabbleBee · 01/02/2024 16:28

Downstairs loo would be my preference but it’s right by the front door, I absolutely guarantee my girl cat would time it perfectly and use it 7 seconds before someone knocked…

They would fit under my stairs, but that’s also in the hallway and no better than the loo really.

I’ve seen a “hack” using an Ikea storage box that might work but that takes a lot of space. At least they’d be hidden! Boy cat likes his privacy and will never use the litter tray if someone is in the room!

Bathroom in the corner

Toddlerteaplease · 01/02/2024 18:45

Kitchen. Nowhere else for it to go.

Same.

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 01/02/2024 18:57

One in each bathroom besides our own toilet. Sad to say it is a deciding factor in house hunting - where do the litter trays go?!

Brawcolli · 01/02/2024 18:58

I’ve got 2 indoor cats, so 3 trays. One is stuffed next to the toilet in my tiny bathroom, one in the hallway which I don’t love as it’s the first thing you see when you come in, and one in the conservatory. Thinking of getting one of those wee cabinet things that you can hide a tray in for the hallway!
