To get one kitten or two?

CrystalQueen87 · 10/01/2024 17:13

I would like experiences on having one or two cats please?
Pros and cons but mainly if having two affects how close and affectionate they are with you as they have each other to go off and roam around outside with etc.

We recently lost our beloved cat and have found a beautiful girl Kitten who we collect in a few weeks.
She has a lovely little brother still available in the litter (the other have been reserved)
And now I am seriously debating whether to get him too 😍
What do you think?
One is enough?
Two will be cute as they are siblings and will have each other?
Will having two mean they are less cuddly and affectionate with us as they will have each other to keep company and maybe go off outside together or will they still be independent and have their own ways and personalities?
Any input or expenses greatly appreciated ☺️
Thanks! 🙏🏼

The black and white one will be a gorgeous lolloping boy, completely battered into submission by his Tortie mistress. who, of course, will never be blamed for anything because she'll just sit there and look sad and pretty at the OP.

FayCarew · 12/01/2024 19:34

Two. Mine play together and lick each other and eat from the same bowl. Even been known to go to the loo at the same time.

Yours look beautiful, @CrystalQueen87 . Love the tux and tache!

Feel free to post another picture once you get them home Grin

This! I have a tortie girl who is nuts (but a complete velcro kitten) and he tuxedo brother is bigger but calmer.

Ibizafun · 12/01/2024 20:18

So pleased you got both.. it will enhance both of their lives. They are gorgeousBear

CrystalQueen87 · 12/01/2024 21:14

Thank you all ☺️
Can I ask what you do with regards to food and water bowls?
Shall I get 1x water bowl for both
And 1 x biscuit bowl for both
Then 2x wet food bowls?!
What do you think?

Sounds about right, perhaps two water bowls maybe in different places? One thing I was told was to keep the water slightly away from the food to avoid bacteria building up, and change regularly obviously.

FayCarew · 12/01/2024 21:58

I use old coffee mugs for water bowls and put them not near the food bowls. Don't put the litter tray(s) near the food. They share a biscuit bowl but I try to give them separate wet food bowls because Boy is greedier than Girl.
You'll need a scratching post.

They tend to sleep where they like.

blackpanth · 12/01/2024 21:59

Definitely. It's better to have 2 gorgeous kitties 😻

TheQueenMakersDaughter · 13/01/2024 08:17

We use water fountains for our 4 cats because they are spoiled and will only drink from a gently trickling fountain or someone's fresh glass of water. Or bath water. But a bowl of water?! Pah. Disgusting.

Be sure to use the same food they are eating now, and the same litter. This will save you a lot of mess. You can change these over time, but keep them the same for now.

Expect that the boxes your new toys and scratching posts come in will be more interesting than the actual contents.

We have twin sisters. We have 2 food bowls but only 1 water bowl. We also only have 1 litter tray. They’re quite happy with this set up - one waits outside when the other one is in there 😂

We have two who were close and gorgeous together as kittens, but now don't have any time for each other. Thats mainly because one of them is a wanderer who comes home every few days, eats everything and leaves again. Definitely a Six Dinner Sid. But we'd still always get two!

Whatnowfgs · 13/01/2024 12:19

Coming on to say get two if you have the budget.

It's double vet bills, double food bills and double the trouble when you go away.

I have had two and they do entertain each other and it's easier to leave them for a couple of hours but just wanted to highlight it's more expensive.

MrTiddlesTheCat · 13/01/2024 17:01

Sorry but YABU. Everyone knows that if it's a choice between 1 or 2 kittens you have to compromise by getting 3.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 13/01/2024 23:20

Florajane · 10/01/2024 18:02

Definitely easier with 2. We wanted to adopt 2 of the 3 left and yes, we now have 3! All are super affectionate and it's definitely helpful that they have each other to play with.

Awww they are gorgeous cats definately got the "Soooo which one of us would you have left behind ? Go on. No , that's not a horses head we're going to leave on your bed ........ so suspicious !"

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 13/01/2024 23:23

The kittens are gorgeous @CrystalQueen87
And yes I agree the tortoiseshell will be the troublesome one ( I had a tortie girl , 17yo)

If you hadn't got the brother you;d have kicked yourself Wink

susiedaisy1912 · 15/01/2024 15:27

I have one water bowl and whilst they were tiny I had one wet food bowl and one biscuit bowl, but when they got to about 6 months I noticed boy cat was pushing girl cat out the way and grabbing more food so I gave them each their own bowls for both wet and dry food. Still have one separate water bowl between them though.

susiedaisy1912 · 15/01/2024 15:29

Also I had two litter trays to avoid one standing on the other ones poop. They ended up using one for wee and one for poop. Nothing worse than one standing the other ones poop then charging all around the house with it in their paws.
