To get one kitten or two?

I would like experiences on having one or two cats please?
Pros and cons but mainly if having two affects how close and affectionate they are with you as they have each other to go off and roam around outside with etc.

We recently lost our beloved cat and have found a beautiful girl Kitten who we collect in a few weeks.
She has a lovely little brother still available in the litter (the other have been reserved)
And now I am seriously debating whether to get him too 😍
What do you think?
One is enough?
Two will be cute as they are siblings and will have each other?
Will having two mean they are less cuddly and affectionate with us as they will have each other to keep company and maybe go off outside together or will they still be independent and have their own ways and personalities?
Any input or expenses greatly appreciated ☺️
Thanks! 🙏🏼

Definitely get the pair if you can. They'll entertain each other and have company. They'll also be more likelihood of you getting at least one that's a lap at/more affectionate. I tend to find that girl cats are less loving the boy cats and tend to hunt more but boy cats do tend to wander more.

Agree with all pp, get 2!

My experience is slightly different, I adopted a mother-daughter pair while the daughter was still a nursing kitten, and it was a lovely experience watching mum keep her daughter in line and teach her how to be a cat. They played together when the kitten was little - the mum would purposely waggle her tail around for the daughter to pounce on!

They stopped liking each other during the teen phase but that didn't last long. They remained very sweet together until the mum passed away.

The now-grown kitten is about as well adjusted and contented a cat you would ever see, and I do believe it's because she grew up with her mum. Cats need other cats imo.

As everyone has said, definitely get two!

Our current kitten is a solo (he was an abandoned semi-feral) and as lovely as he is, he's been a lot more work than our previous brother/sister pair. We're also very lucky that our older cats tolerate his craziness!

I got a second kitten a fortnight after the first because she was pathetically small and I'm a mug.

When they weren't tearing lumps out out of one another, they were bundled up in a radiator hanger together, working together to frame the Dog for slashing through a foolishly unsupervised, brand new, bag of crunchies on the kitchen countertop or taking turns when playing with somebody. She spent her nights in with me, he spent most of his in with the DDs.

I bought two kittens home, brother and sister. I'm so glad I did, they are great companions for each other. It was a bit manic for a few weeks when they were tiny but they played with each other a lot and wore each other out. As long as you can afford to have two then I definitely recommend getting both.

FoulWrinkledWitch · 10/01/2024 19:35

Definitely two. They are company for each other and will groom each other and play together. They will be just as affectionate with you. Our two wait by the window watching for the other one to come in, and then rush to greet each other. It's lovely to watch.

Get two. The only singleton I have taken in has been by far the toughest to introduce - partly that is because he is a hyperactive ginger maniac who is very slow to learn respect for the other cats' boundaries, but it is also because the others were already two bonded pairs. We're getting there and he's now bonded with two of the other four, learned to respect the others and almost completely stop being a bully, but it's been really hard work and wouldn't have been possible if I hadn't been mostly WFH and had not had a second person in the house.

The only thing better than one cat is two!

Toddlerteaplease · 10/01/2024 22:20

My two late siblings never slept like my two unrelated cats!

another vote for two. I think their temperaments will always be individual. The joy mine being me everyday is endless and having different characters is endearing

@iusedtohavechickens this is the dream! So cute.

another vote for two. Seeing them cuddled up and playing together is the best. They still love cuddles with us.

FrostieBoabby · 10/01/2024 23:18

Having 2 is better for the kitten stage, all the play fighting is done by kittens and you'll only need to provide the cuddling and fussing rather than sacrificing your finger and toes for stalking and fighting games.

I could never turn my 2 into sleeping in the bed hot water bottle cats though as one would always have a sneaky pounce on the other at 4am followed by much chasing and pouncing round the room!

Lorac23 · 10/01/2024 23:19

Another vote for two. Many cats really benefit from a feline companion. We have two, an older girl and a younger boy schnoggle monster, not related. Our previous boy cat was sadly run over, but we were fairly sure he was related to the older girl cat somehow, he was born just a few streets away and they had identical birthmarks and other markings and took to each other within hours. They bring us hours of laughter at their antics and the way they interact.

Both - they’ll be good company for each other and just as loving to you - you can’t leave him

Don't blame us!! Blame yourself for being unable to say no to that cute, fluffy, purry bundle with huge eyes whimpering about how lonely and cold and abandoned he will feel when you cruelly kidnap his sister.

So well done for doing the humane thing 😺

CatChant · 11/01/2024 16:20

Well done! I’m sure you’ll never regret it.

Enjoy your lovely kittens.

AreTheyOrArentThey · 11/01/2024 16:28

We’ve always had single cats (then introduced a kitten to an established older cat - bit of a disaster)

last year we adopted two litter mates and it’s lovely - for us very useful to them to have each other as the dog takes up so much of our attention!!

Definitely 2.
I've had sets of 2 and singles over the years and by far j would always recommend getting 2 together.
Not only do they keep each other company and play together, but I find having more than one at a time means you really get to see the differences in each cats character.
And playing together sometimes means less time spent running up your curtains out of boredom playing alone.
And they will sleep together which is cute.
