At the end of my tether with cat refusing litter tray!

We’ve had our cat for a year and she rarely uses her litter tray, preferring to wee and poo on the floor.

I’ve tried different litters, she has nice big trays, we’ve got 2 trays and have put them where she likes to wee on the carpet but she’ll just go an either wee next to the tray or find another spot on the floor to go.

its beginning to smell and I’m just not sure what to do.

She’s a rescue but is a pedigree (British Blue) and is 5 years old. We’ve had her for a year and she’s been rubbish at using her tray the whole time. Apparently before we had her she was used for breeding and had a couple of litters. She was spayed before she was rehomed though. She is an indoor cat as she was never allowed out in her previous home. I’m just stumped. Any ideas as I’m really fed up.

Have you had her checked out for health issues? My rescue cat was this way for almost 6 months and in the end I changed her diet and she started weeing outside. Look up Jackson Galaxy on YouTube for some great ideas!

She needs to be checked over by a vet. Two of the most common reasons cats won't use their litter trays are stress and pain.

My cat won't use a litter tray but he goes outside. Could you let her outside even if supervised? Having seen his toileting behaviour outside, I can totally see why my cat refuses the litter tray. He need a massive space because he circles around so many times and changes his mind about the precise spot that he wants to use. Despite having the largest litter tray that we could find, it's nowhere near the size of the soil patch that he uses outside.

Are you using an enzyme cleaner?
Has she been checked for a UTI?
Did she use a tray in rescue?
Does she show signs of wanting to go outside?
Does she have lots of enrichment stuff?

Can you remember which types of litter you’ve tried?

We have discovered that with fiend kitten a half empty tray does the trick - he likes the empty side and we slide the litter over to scoop. Plus more trays!
