Came home from work tonight and no sign of Finlay
Then found him in his basket with blood on face - we think he may have been hit by a car - tried not to move him unnecessarily and rang emergency vets
We’ve just returned home to wait anxiously for X-rays and scans - main concern is he cannot weight bear on back legs at all
Ive asked for them not to PTS without letting us say goodbye
I don’t know whether to think the worst and hope to be proved wrong or or be hopeful and feel worse if it doesn’t work out for him
I am beyond devastated for those who remember me we lost Reuben and Evie back in May and have only had Finlay a few short months

Positive news and fingers crossed he doesn't have to have the amputation. Finlay is a beautiful boy!

Re crating him - my two ladies love to watch birds out the window so if you have patio doors, that might be a good place to site it?

beanontoast · 14/12/2023 15:52

What a beautiful boy, so glad there was a positive update. If he does need the amputation try not to worry, he will adapt, cats with fewer legs still live long happy lives

Beamur · 14/12/2023 15:57

Friend of mine had a young cat involved in a car accident - lost a leg.
He made an excellent recovery and is a very mobile tripod!

JaceLancs · 14/12/2023 17:45

Op delayed until tomorrow as they needed to order different pins and plates - we’ve bought very large dog crate with 2 doors so can put food in and clean litter tray without having to move things
Good idea about TV he loves YouTube so could set up iPad nearby
They are all being very positive about his chance of full recovery although they do have to tell you the worst case scenario

He has now been moved to specialist hospital in the Lake District - think we are looking in region of £6k for op, my own vet bill for last night was £700 and I’m not sure what aftercare costs there will be
Im only mentioning this in case it helps others as DD has just got a kitten and didn’t go for as high a level of cover - in light of this she has just contacted them and increased the cover

If it's at all reassuring, my Savannah fell off the bannisters nearly 3 months ago and smashed one of her back legs to pieces, multiple fractures to tibia and her fibia. She had plates and pins put in by an amazing surgeon, 6 weeks crate rest, 4 weeks room rest, and she's genuinely now completely back to normal. £6000 in total but worth it and she's made a full recovery. I hope all goes well for you tomorrow

JaceLancs · 14/12/2023 18:11

Thank you that is very re assuring x

JaceLancs · 13/12/2023 21:12

Thank you all
3rd gin and am even considering eating something
He is so young (5 months) but maybe that’s better as he would adapt
Does anyone have experience of cats recovering from major joint surgery? A friend has just suggested he may need to be caged whilst recovering to restrict movement whilst we are not around to look out for him

Our cat recently was hit by car got a dislocated hip which they put back under anaesthetic. She needed six weeks cage rest it was difficult but necessary

poetrylover · 14/12/2023 18:39

My cat was run over on his drive when he was very young by his then owner who took him to the vet but didn't want to pay the bills so abandoned him. The top of his femur was completely removed so he has no hip joint. If the cats are young the muscle grows around it and supports it. So while it took him a while to jump up onto the counters he is perfectly fine but has a wonky walk!

I hope your kitty cat gets better soon!

EachandEveryone · 14/12/2023 21:16

Have you looked into cat proofing your garden for when he recovers or getting a catio? I hope he makes a full recovery.

Logoplanter · 14/12/2023 21:41

So positive to hear the updates. He's very fortunate to have such a caring and responsible owner.

This post has made me have a look at our insurance policy for our two cats.. We are with Many Pets and have a £15k limit for each cat each year and lifetime insurance. Does anyone know if that's a good enough policy? We took it out a few years ago when we got them and I'm sure I would have looked into it all at the time. Any thoughts? Thanks and sorry to hijack

JaceLancs · 14/12/2023 22:05

I’m with many pets on 15k plan and am very happy with how they’ve dealt with everything
my excess was only £99 too
Im hoping that will cover me for everything else for rest of year
I also have pet plan with my own vet which gives 10% discount and free check ups, vaccination, flea and worming etc

Good luck for tomorrow. I'll be thinking of you both 🙏🏻🩵💙🩵

Pinkpinkpink15 · 14/12/2023 22:45

Many many years ago our boy cat was hit by a car, he dragged himself up our very steep driveway and collapsed on the back stairs.

his back leg had to be amputated, & they kept him in, (as they did in those days) I'm not sure now how long it was but about 3 weeks I think (we visited). No cage once he came home. He was an adult rescue when we got him & he had some bad habits! Gallows humour we joked that it was extreme, but one way to cure his habit of jumping onto the dining table!! 🤮 But he'd been home a very short time before 3 legs was jumping into the table 🤦🏻‍♀️

big hugs to you all.

he is a beautiful teddy bear cat, he'll figure it out if he has to. But hopefully you'll get him home with 4 legs very soon!!

JaceLancs · 14/12/2023 23:15

He is such a beautiful boy and am so grateful the only facial damage is a lost baby tooth and grazes to his chin
Thank you all so much for the hand holds, prayers and good wishes - your positive stories have really helped
This is one of the nicest bits of Mumsnet xx

He really is a lovely little fella.

CeciledeVolangesdeNouveau · 15/12/2023 00:44

Adding mine (and my cat’s) crossed fingers for you. I don’t know any minutiae of your situation but my best friend in childhood had a cat with an incredibly happy and active life as a three-legged cat so all is not lost if he needs to go through that. It’s one of the worst fears we go through as cat parents - car accidents - and though I hope all his limbs can survive he can still have many adventures with three legs. I hope this doesn’t sound patronising but it’s better than finding him crumpled up dead in the road and I’m really glad neither of you went through that. Good job on the insurance too.

Lunde · 15/12/2023 00:48

❤hope all goes well with surgery

MicrowaveRice · 15/12/2023 00:51

Good luck Finlay! We have a neighbouring three legged cat who avails himself of food in every house within 500 yards and has no difficulty going under, over or around obstacles, it doesn't slow him down at all.

Logoplanter · 15/12/2023 05:45

Thanks JaceLancs for the information re insurance - that is great to know.

Good luck today and please let us know how it goes.

Iamacatslave · 15/12/2023 09:01

Finlay is a stunning boy. Good Luck for today’s surgery. ❤️

TheShellBeach · 15/12/2023 13:51

Hope there is good news for Finlay today, OP.

RusticChips · 15/12/2023 17:59

My cat was knock over by a car and broke his pelvis when he was a year old. He didn't have surgery had to stay in a dog create for 6-8 weeks - you would never no it, he is fine and still mad climbing up trees. His two day stay at the vets cost £1950 for just pain relief and x-rays - luckily was covered by insurance.

OneFingerOneThumbKeepMoving · 15/12/2023 21:31

I know you are probably tired out, just wondered if you have any news? You've both been in my head all day 🍀🤞🏻 xxx

JaceLancs · 15/12/2023 21:53

I rang at 6 but he was still in theatre - they’ve been in touch around 8 to say he was coming round and that they were quite optimistic - they’ve also found a fractured vertebra but hope it will mend on its own with rest - if not improving at next check up they will see what’s best
They warned me that they had to cut muscles and move nerves more extensively than first thought so it may mean a longer recovery
Not sure whether he will be able to come home tomorrow night or collect Sunday but I’m content he’s in the best possible place
I know it’s private and expensive but can’t fault their care and levels of communication
Cant wait to have him home for a cuddle
