Out of date cat food

I‘ve just found a box cat food at the back of a cupboard- 92 sachets of wet food.

Best before date- March 2022 😬

I think it needs to be binned. DH thinks it will be fine.

what do you think?

Would you eat food that out of date? Bin it of course!

I’d say the same as about human food - past BB is fine as it’s a mark of quality rather than safety, past UB is not. Wet food would be UB I imagine.

DeliahSmilah · 28/10/2023 08:13

Ub or bbe? I'd eat food that was BBE, or at least try it.

If it was a couple of weeks out of date, I would maybe try a couple of pouches, but it's over 18 months past the expiry date - you can't give it to your poor cat!

If the sachets are not bulging then it is absolutely fine. The sachets are sterile when they are sealed. The food does not go off until the container is unsealed. That is why tins and sachets of this sort have Best Before dates and not Use By dates. This applies to human food as well.

When wet sachets go bad the smell is overwhelming, it clear something is very very wrong.

I'd probably not have checked the date and fed them to the cat.
