How much does your vet charge for flea treatments v prescribing them?

I have just asked my vets for Felpreva (flea/tick/worm treatment) for my 2 cats. They were going to charge me £44.30 per cat. It's a lot cheaper online so I asked if they could just send me a prescription and the charge is £22. This seems crazy to me! What do your vets charge?

My vets charge £29 per prescription.
Was the £44 for 3 months?

AnotherEmma · 29/09/2023 18:08

Yes it only needs to be given every 3 months which is why I'm getting it. Less faff!

£15 for a prescription. I just buy flea/worm stuff OTC though.

My vets charge 20 for a prescription so getting online didn't actually save that much money!

AnotherEmma · 29/09/2023 20:42

Luckily the vet only charged for 1 prescription and has prescribed 2 doses for each cat (lasting 6 months overall) so I am still saving about £7 per dose doing it this way. Hope this spot on stuff is good!

Until now we'd been alternating Stronghold (on prescription from vet, expensive) with cheaper OTC stuff - Advantage, I think. But we are so busy and end up forgetting to do it or the cats are AWOL when it's time to do it. We went a while without doing it and got an infestation 😱 So I think this is worth it for the peace of mind.

I get flea and worm treatment for a tenner a month on a plan plus 20% off any medical treatment.

That's how much ours costs, we have 2 cats. I just get it in the spring and summer, then my cats barely go out autumn winter so we skip it. They used to be indoor cats so even when they go out they stay very close by bless them.

I was considering just giving Felpreva in spring and summer - covering April to September maybe - but we would still need to give something in autumn/winter because the cats go out a lot all year round. We could use Advantage but we'd have the same problem with administering it monthly Confused

I work in a small independent veterinary practice. They charge £15 for a written prescription. Prescription flea and worming medication checks cost £12 (plus the cost of the product). They used to be free of charge but this has recently changed along with RCVS guidelines. The reason online pharmacies are a lot cheaper than practices is because they can buy and store the medications in bulk in warehouses.

monthly flea and worming treatments (given as 3months at a time) are included in cost of the monthly vet plan i have for my kitten.

Nsky62 · 29/09/2023 22:20

Depending on weight of cat, under 5 kg, I get stronghold £28 for 3 months
