Oh God, any idea what's up with my cat?

Disclaimer, it's 8am, I'm taking my kids school then calling a vet! He will get immediately veterinary treatment!

Yesterday he kept making a weird noise.

Like a single strange pop sound (vocally not anything physical popping) with a very dramatic jaw movement.

I thought he was just being an oddball, he's a ginger cat and has always been funny.
Last night I went to move him off the bed and he had drooled everywhere. I thought he had just been in a deep sleep.

I asked DD if he had eaten and she said yes (he's her cat and eats in her bedroom)

However I just went to give him some of his favourite treats and he seemed ravenous but couldn't eat them! He kept trying to pick it up awkwardly then they fell from his mouth.

I tried kibble and the same.

He could eat soft tinned mackerel.

I'm so worried about him. He's wrapped up in a crate now waiting for vets to open but any idea what it could be??

There's drool all round his mouth again

Can he walk OK? Has his face drooped. Have you checked his jaw?
How old is he?

Ohdearwhatnow4 · 29/09/2023 08:08

Dont feed him any more till you've spoken vets

Face looks normal, walking, acting completly normal physically. If he want making the weird noise or trying to eat you wouldn't think anything is amiss.

Actually he's not made the no use this morning.

He is 9 months old.

Has he been outside in contact with slug pellets?

Idrankyourbananamilk · 29/09/2023 08:10

Too many options really such as tooth abscess, foreign object lodged in mouth or throat. I wouldn’t speculate in case it is something minor, you are doing the best thing with rushing him to the vet! Hope he’s ok.

I know. I shouldn't have given him the fish. I didn't think. He just liked so hungry and I thought shit how long has he gone without eating?!

It could be a virus - mine got a secondary bacterial infection in his mouth and couldn't keep anything dry in or chew.

He goes outside, oh god I hope he's not been poisoned.

I just thought too. When we first got him DD insisted he would be indoor cat, the vet gave him indoor cat vaccines.
Could he have caught something? Something they don't vaccinate for?
I thought it was daft they did that because even an indoor cat can escape!

It won't be anything to do with vaccine, doubt if he's been poisoned more likely neurological or ear/ mouth infection.

Cattykin · 29/09/2023 09:49

Thanks. I'll update when we know more

Slug pellets tend to be very dramatic symptoms. You’d know. (Fortunately relatively easily treatable).

I agree with pp- sounds more like teeth/ear, maybe parotid infection or similar.

hope it’s simple and inexpensive!

Has he eaten or been given anything? my cat found a tramadol on the floor that my ex husband dropped, he spent the day drooling horribly and nearly died.
Have you asked your daughter if she gave him anything?
Quite honestly an animal is the responsibility of an adult at all times unless your child is an adult.

Polkadotpjs · 29/09/2023 09:58

Oh I hope he's ok. Poor you

I hope he's okay OP. My cat earlier this year was vomiting and acting strange and we convinced ourselves he'd had a slug pellet, we got the the vets and they said if it was we'd have noticed much earlier (it had been 24 hours since he'd been out) and he's have been dead by this time. So I think if he'd have been poisoned you'd know.

Our cat ended up having a blockage in his stomach caused by eating flip flop but he wanted to eat and couldn't his tongue would like at the corner of his mouth, but he went 5 days without food before surgery so don't worry about him going a day with no food. He'll be okay.

Fingers crossed for good news at the vets

What country are you in? If you're in Australia, the snakes seem to be out early this year.
