Ragdolls

I am planning on viewing some ragdoll kittens shortly. Super excited and haven’t had an indoor cat before, so please hit me with your ragdoll advice, photos, warnings etc.

One issue my partner is intimating he will take issue with white hairs everywhere… hoping this won’t be as bad as he’s making out??

We had a Ragdoll and the hair gets everywhere.

ThreeLeggedCat · 24/08/2023 20:26

One of ours is 1/4 ragdoll. He really is NOT bright. Love him though!

Ostryga · 24/08/2023 20:29

My friend has a gorgeous ragdoll, he is incredibly stupid but incredibly loving. Really, really cat proof all doors and windows because if their brains click into gear long enough and they manage to get out they’ll be gone. They’re so friendly and pretty someone will snatch them up.

Never wear dark colours because you’ll look like you’ve got white furry trousers on.

Their stomachs can be really sensitive and they can be quite fussy from what I have seen.

Mushroo · 24/08/2023 20:29

I don’t find the fur that bad! At least no more so than any other cat. They get much less knotty than other long haired cats as well.

100% recommend. Mine is my shadow, she meows at me every morning whilst I get ready until I pick her up for a cuddle 🥰

lapochette · 24/08/2023 20:32

We have a rag doll and there's fur everywhere. It's a daily battle! That being said she is the friendliest cat ever!

Farmersweeklyreader · 24/08/2023 20:32

Yep, as previous posters have stated, the hair is unreal. Think massive clumps of white hair deposited everywhere and also white hair flying about in the air when going through a moulting cycle.
My ragdoll goes outside like a normal cat does. I got him with the intention of keeping him in however this didn’t work well for puss. He learned to open doors, escape through windows etc. He has a happy charmed life though. We live rurally so not too much traffic that I have to worry about him. Just something else to think about incase your kitten prefers the outdoors.

My rag dolls nick name is monkey he's really friendly even will go and sit on strangers knees who visit. Hes affectionate and likes being around people including my son who has special needs. My other cats a British short hair and she stays away from my son. His hairs is everywhere and he doesn't cover his poo in the litter tray. But he's a good cat

Taboo but I shaved my ragdoll every few months so it didn’t shed at all. It was great & she didn’t care 😄

Buffypaws · 24/08/2023 20:51

is it not a bit less cute if you bald it?

Buffypaws · 24/08/2023 20:52

@Sadless omg he’s so cute!

Why are ragdolls so hopeless at covering poo? Mine will go anywhere he feels like it 🙈

Floralnomad · 24/08/2023 20:55

What has made you choose a Ragdoll @Buffypaws ? , also if you are having an indoor cat get 2 so they can entertain each other .

30ishiwish · 24/08/2023 20:57

No problem with fur that a good hoover and a lint roller won’t solve.

I often get to work and find that I’ve been ‘attacked’ (cats have rubbed against me/tried to trip me up/ kill me) before I’ve left the house and I have a spare roller in my desk drawer to sort out the damage!

Bloody lovely cats.

BeverlyBrook · 24/08/2023 21:00

Oh what's a bit of fluff on your trousers, eh. They are so adorable!

30ishiwish · 24/08/2023 21:00

Also, ours are indoors cats but, when I hang out the washing or spend time in the garden or summer house, they just come and sit with us now. They are a few years old and don’t even try to get out the garden. One of them now lets me know when the washing machine has finished so that I will take him outside. He sulks on wet days.

Gingerwarthog · 24/08/2023 21:00

We have 2 ragdolls and they are great company for each other. Fun, affectionate and beautiful girls!
They follow us around the house like puppies and love cuddles and to curl up next to us (but are not lap cats).

Gingerwarthog · 24/08/2023 21:01

Oh - no problem with fluff that the cat brush can't sort and anyway - totally worth it.
Best decision.

2 is the plan. I just think they are so cute. I had two cats inherited from my Nan when I was a kid which were similar (blue eyes, some sort of Siamese cross). And they’re meant to be friendly etc

Lint roller in the office is a good shout for bf

if you want friendly then have a look at Siamese . We’ve had both but the Siamese are definitely more friendly and cuddly .

mindbogglingmaths · 24/08/2023 21:24

Build a catio or cat proof the garden - no 1 rule. They're indoor cats for a reason. If they get out they've got zero road sense, far too trusting and will sadly probably get run over. No reputable breeder will let you have one unless you can show you have a decent indoor set up.

Really not that hard to keep them in. If you're going out of the front door, everyone must be aware where they are before that door is opened. Does limit you somewhat on sunny days hence the need for a catio attached to the house where they can spend cool time in the shade safely whilst everyone else is legging in and out of the house.

Big big difference between a properly bred one with papers and one with a more dodgy background, cross breed for eg...dodgy background one will give you more of a normal cat and you'll see claws! Proper bred rag dolls are chilled as anything, will happily flop in your arms and cannot be riled up in the slightest about anything.

You're looking at minimum of £1000 per ragdoll kitten. Dodgy stomachs definitely and ear infections galore. Brushing daily is a necessity but the hair really isn't that bad so long as you do it daily. 100% need pet insurance.

Amazing breed.
