Can I make my own cat food?

I'm looking for some advice. I live overseas and the choice of cat food is either quite poor quality (and my cats hate it) or incredibly expensive as it's imported. It's just gone up in price again and I was considering making my own.

I thought some kind of cooked chicken and veg combination, but my vet said they shouldn't have chicken every day.

They need a lot of protein, as they're big cats (still technically kittens - but they're nearly 4kg), so I thought it would be a good thing for them to have fresh meat.

Does anyone make their own food and have any suggestions?

They need to have other things added as well. Taurine I think, not sure what else. I think it will end up very expensive.

There are some people on the preserving and canning Facebook groups who make their own cat food.

Thanks. So is it that they'd be missing some nutritional elements, rather than the chicken being bad for them?

I don't have a FB account any more, but I might see if I can find that group.

You can make your own food, but you really need to know what you're doing so that you make sure you're giving your cats everything they need.

It's not a case of just giving them meat and vegetables - cats must have taurine in their diets - if they don't get enough of it, it can lead to organ failure and death.

Personally I know I'm not knowledgeable enough to feed my cats a homemade diet - and once you think about all the vitamins and supplements they need, it's often more expensive than feeding them a good quality commercial diet.

You could consider raw feeding? There are some pre-made raw diets available for cats on the market.

All muscle meat contains taurine.

Or feed a commercial raw like moggi, Purrform etc
