Is my 18 month old cat just silent farting?

Occasionally there is just a farty smell - can be when he is lying relaxing or when he makes an effort like jumping down. The vet expressed his anal glands two weeks ago and says he can't be farting if we don't hear him do so. It doesn't smell fishy. She said to change food which is easier said than done when you have a ton of it in and the other one eats the same ( no smells) . His poos are normal and his bottom doesn't smell. Please someone else tell me they have had a farty cat 😂

Oh god our cats can definitely do silent and deadly ones. When we got them it was more frequent but they're on grain free food now and it's just occasional, poos are in "good shape"! It also.might have improved because now they're allowed in the garden and eating some grass. I have no idea.

Our garden has been cat proofed now and he gets outside now. The vet actually said to give him more fibre.

I've never known a cat to fart until I sat next to my friends cat. Definitely silent but deadly. Cheddar also farts occasionally, magic was far to ladylike for such things!

CosyCoffee · 21/08/2023 13:03

I've never heard a cat fart but I've certainly smelled them. They're masters of the SBD.

cinnamonfrenchtoast · 21/08/2023 13:04

Of course cats can silent fart - what is your vet talking about?! Confused

evilharpy · 21/08/2023 13:18

I've had four cats in my life. The first three never farted. The fourth, who is currently about 4 months old, is a silent assassin. It's absolutely disgusting. Good job he's cute.

Beamur · 21/08/2023 13:20

Cats most certainly do silent fart.
One of mine was the gassiest kitten ever - farted every time she was picked up. Sturdy healthy adult now and still parps occasionally.

HippyChickMama · 21/08/2023 13:25

I've had many cats over the years and I don't think I've ever heard one fart, have certainly smelled them though! We had one old cat years ago that would sit next to you on the sofa, silently fart and then get up and move, leaving the stink behind 🤢

eurochick · 21/08/2023 14:00

Your vet can't be a cat owner. Cats definitely do silent but deadly farts. Ime they very rarely do an audible fart.

PriamFarrl · 21/08/2023 14:02

Oh yes they silent fart. What does the vet think will make the noise? They don’t have buttocks.

Grain free?

I thought cats were only supposed to eat meat?

MrsFiddle · 21/08/2023 16:19

This is very reassuring! 😂

Fibre? Wtf

Topseyt123 · 21/08/2023 17:04

Cats are masters of the art of silent but deadly farting. Mine certainly was, and he was also a total fusspot over what food he would eat or turn his nose up at. So I only had a certain number of options and success was limited.

I also had a labrador dog who could fart for England. Silent but deadly again. We called them his "room clearers" and he would just happily lie in his basket producing his gaseous emissions all evening!

You"ll be surprsed at how much fillers (and other crap) cat food in the supermarket has if you have a look, most of them contain wheat/grains as a substantial ingredient. This is Whiskas wet food (so it looks like.meat chunks) ingredients, it's only 35% animal.product:

With Chicken Meat and Animal Derivatives (35%, including 4% Chicken in the Chunk), Cereals, Minerals, Derivatives of Vegetable Origin, Various Sugars

Theunamedcat · 25/08/2023 22:59

It's the sugers in the cat food that give them the gas when my cat has whiskers pouches they love it! But it does not love them back too much filler and suger it makes them gassy and soft poo means there anal glands don't express properly (or something) and they get stinky butt so I give them better quality food its better for them but they are not keen on it tbh

Some contain ash (obv the cheapest of the cheap) which can't be good for them!

My old housemate's kitten was extremely windy, and she was fed really expensive kitten food.

DarkAndWild · 25/08/2023 23:02

I’ve never heard my current cat fart but I definitely know when’s she’s done one!
My previous cat was very farty, but also very loud. Typical male.

Iamacatslave · 26/08/2023 11:04

I’ve heard my cat fart once, the numerous other times I just smell them 🤢.
