Smelly cat smelly cat ... why are you farting?

Our dkitten is about 6 months old and she has the stinkiest most lingering farts I've ever smelled in a cat - really putrid smellEnvy . (In fact never known a farty cat at all before). The obvious cause would presumably be her diet but she's eating exactly the same as our DBig Cat (and previous cats) who always smells lovely despite supplementing his own diet with random rodent. She has no diarrhoea and is fit as a fiddle. Food is mainly James Wellbeloved kitten and adult dry, plus a bit of Gourmet wet food. Should we be changing this? What to? Obviously DBig Cat will have to change his diet too due to plate swapping.

What could be causing this? Any ideas?

No ideas but following as I have the same problem with my 5 month old boy kitten. Eats the same food as our 11 month old female, but my goodness he is the stinkiest feline I have ever met.

Ah, interesting that it's the same with you @tattychicken

Check the meat content.
Check the wheat content.

My rescue couldn't cope with too much dry food as that caused her tummy to make popping candy noises. I assume it would have been painful too. She had a wet pouch once in morning, once in evening, dry biscuits for overnight snack.

If kitten cleans their plate in one sitting could you feed in separate rooms?

Haffdonga · 07/08/2023 21:32

Thanks @CantThinkOfANameAtAll we do feed them in separate rooms but dkitten isn't very bothered by the wet food and often leaves it. The dry food is down all the time but good idea about wheat content. I could try them both on the JW grain free version.

Does she go outside? I had a cat that ate a mole once, he looked quite uncomfortable for a few hours and had absolutely industrial strength farts. They were almost visible.

She's only been outside under escort so far so I don't think she's had mole yet but the farts have been toxic from day one!

You could try a probiotic if you haven’t already, her gut flora might be a bit out of whack? Mine will eat anything if it’s got fortiflora sprinkled on it, it’s pricey but you might find you only need to do it for a few days to get her rebalanced. One of mine also gets room clearing farts every now and again, he’s a demon for eating flies which don’t agree with him and a couple of days of fortiflora sorts him out completely!

Fortiflora just ordered, thanks @PineappleMint
