Cat weed on the bed today with me in it….why?

He’s 4yo, never done anything like this before. He’s a house cat, always uses the litter trays.

so I’ve been away for a week……came back Thursday. Could it really be a protest wee as I’ve been away?

I was in bed, dh in bed…..cat jumps on top of the duvet. Now don’t judge but the duvet wasn’t in a duvet cover…..so is perhaps a bit more rustly than normal. Might that have confused him? He meowed loudly a couple of times, I asked him what was wrong, dh said he wanted some attention, then he did a massive wee. Not just a little spray, but a proper puddle.

im nervous about letting him back in the bedroom.

Did he drink enough while you were away? Mine doesn’t eat and drink as much as usual when unsettled and UTIs can cause them to wee in peculiar places.

helpfulperson · 08/07/2023 20:51

maybe a urine infection if he was meowing beforehand. Boy cats are prone to them. Has he used his litter tray OK since?

LT2 · 08/07/2023 20:52

The only time a cat has done this is when he had a urine infection!

Brk · 08/07/2023 21:04

Ask the vet to test for infection

HaveYouHeardOfARoadAtlas · 08/07/2023 21:10

Thanks, I’ll keep an eye on him. The litter tray has been used since but I have two cats so can’t be 100% sure but I’d say there’s been enough wee in it for both today. No more weeing in unusual places since

Cats do protest wee - the only accident Dcat has ever had was on my pillow the week DD1 was born. That was fun.

But I agree that a UTI is very worth watching out for.

Papergirl1968 · 08/07/2023 21:20

Did he make eye contact with you when he did the wee? If so, it's likely he was saying fuck you for leaving me!

HaveYouHeardOfARoadAtlas · 08/07/2023 21:21

He made eye contact and then turned his bum to me and weed.

He is a proper clingy boy with me as well so I can imagine me being away unsettled him. He follows me everywhere normally

I suspect a protest wee then but keep an eye on him.
One of mine occasionally does a poo in the shower tray if the bathroom litter tray is not deemed clean enough and they're idle to go downstairs to the other litter tray.

Papergirl1968 · 08/07/2023 21:27

Too idle...

ItsALongWayToTheTop · 08/07/2023 21:28

What do you feed him? Mine did this to me shortly before he was diagnosed with cystitis at 4yo - potentially fatal in tom cats. He's been on a strict wet food diet since he was treated.

This sounds like a protest wee. If it's repeated then consider a UTI. My little fur all
Is on crystal management food due to cat kidney stones (or something similar). She weed every time on the bed..... my other boy would protest wee and poo occasionally when p*ssed off (lol) with us.

TranquilityofSolitude · 08/07/2023 21:34

My cat absolutely loves a "naked" duvet. As soon as I take the cover off he has to lie on it. I'm not sure if he'd wee on it, but it certainly causes him to get very excited and to behave differently.

FormerlyPathologicallyHappy · 08/07/2023 21:37

Mine had a uti after dh died, only symptom was weeing on the bed.

She had antibiotics.

Mix of dry and wet cat food. They have a Water fountain to encourage fluids as well.

Possible UTI or a kidney problem. Has he been drinking a lot? Was it a copious quantity of piss? It's worth getting him checked out before you decide it was definitely spite.

We had a lovely cat who the vet concluded had some sort of congenital kidney problem, he only lived to about 4. He seemed to understand that only a large, well-upholstered piece of furniture such as a bed or sofa could possibly absorb the gallons of piss he produced.

IAmcuriousyellow · 08/07/2023 22:06

I’ve had this happen, exactly the same, eye contact and everything. It was 100% a protest, in this case a relocation of litter tray.

Kellioo · 08/07/2023 22:08

My cat has done this twice in 10 years, once when ex mil came to stay, jumped on her bed with her in it and did a massive wee (excellent judge of character).

2nd time was when we moved ds from using a cot to a bed, first night in the bed the cat jumped on and wee'd!

I think protest wees in both cases, we now tiptoe round trying not to piss him off again!

Blueuggboots · 08/07/2023 22:30

My cat protest wees! If we have lots of people round, if we take him to the vet.....he's currently in Cattery for 2 weeks so I'm expecting the mother of all protest wees when we return!!!
Good job he's cute.

I would keep an eye on him and see what he's like over the weekend - if it's a one off I wouldn't worry too much but if it happens again, definitely get him checked out on Monday.

TaraRhu · 08/07/2023 22:59

Mine does this when it's hot. Think it's because her tray smells a bit worse in the heat... so
