I can't find homes for my kittens

SkySmiler · 12/06/2023 13:50

My girl had 4, we are keeping one and one has gone to a friend, bit I cannot find homes for the other 2 despite advertising them, they're 11 weeks now, I wish I could keep them but I cannot afford it. 😞

Please get in touch with your local animal shelter so that you can arrange to have your cat neutered and they may be able to help rehome the kittens. (And donate to them what you can afford)

Lochjeda · 12/06/2023 13:52

Where have you advertised them? Kittens are snapped up in my area. How much are you selling for and what breed?

MeMyCatsAndMyBooks · 12/06/2023 13:59

I hope you can afford to have the ones you've kept spaded!
Contact your local rescue but beware for a lecture coming your way.

DiscoBeat · 12/06/2023 14:01

It would be great to have found homes before breeding. But otherwise I guess an animal shelter. Whatever you do make sure if you do sell them that you check the homes and charge enough to put off anyone nasty.

My first cat (I was ignorant of all this stuff) became pregnant & 3 people wanted her kittens. She produced 3 kittens so I thought all was well; then one person dropped out & we had to scramble to find that one a home.

You can plan, but it doesn't always work out. And yes, we've had our subsequent cats spayed before they produced!

SkySmiler · 12/06/2023 14:10

Thanks all, mum was taken in to be spayed and subsequently found to be pregnant again.... she has been spayed now.

I desperately want to avoid a shelter, they're quite timid and I would worry so much, I adore them already.

I'm in Buckinghamshire and have tried FB, gumtree and petify.

@Lochjeda whereabouts are you? Happy to deliver to good homes, 2 little black short hair domestic boys.

LittleMissViolet · 12/06/2023 14:17

Roughly whereabouts in Bucks are you?

Blue Cross and Cats Protection run home direct schemes so they could advertise and rehome them directly without them having to go to a shelter. Kittens normally get snapped up. I can't foresee you would have a problem.

I've always had cats and would go to one of the charities rather than a kitten from Gumtree or Facebook.

SkySmiler · 12/06/2023 14:19

@LittleMissViolet thanks so much I didn't know that, just didn't want them to be passed from pillar to post.

I'm in Milton Keynes.

I hate the idea of kittens being advertised on Gumtree, particularly free, there are sk many awful people around.
Cats Protection or an animal charity, definitely.

Thesunwillcomeoutverysoon · 12/06/2023 14:21

Who the hell said spaded??
Omg.

I think they meant spayed. Not everyone is good at spelling.

SkySmiler · 12/06/2023 14:28

@BCSurvivor you have to pay to advertise them on gumtree and I was asking for £100 - I just want good homes for them.

LittleMissViolet · 12/06/2023 14:29

If they're safe and well fed the charities would prefer you to keep them. They will have a wider reach in terms of advertising for you and will vet new owners for you so it's much easier.

Our cat came to us this way when the people who owned him were having to sell their house and go into rented.

MK is a bit far from me but there should be a few cat charities nearby who should be able to help.

Best of luck. I am sure you will find them a lovely home.

EyelessArseFace · 12/06/2023 14:31

@SkySmiler Get in touch with HULA animal rescue centre. Please do this, as they will check the new owners out properly.

With the best will in the world you can't do that, and if you advertise locally (or even if someone in MK has seen your post on here and contacts you), you have no idea where the kittens will end up, or whether they will be properly chipped, vaccinated & neutered.

Missingmyusername · 12/06/2023 14:31

Don’t let them go for free, they can be used as a bait in dog fighting.

Cats protection would find good homes.

Yeah I totally meant get her with a spade. 🙄
Obvious spelling error!

catsnhats11 · 12/06/2023 14:34

Why avoid a shelter? They have a much better chance of going to a good home via a shelter than selling them to God knows who on Gumtree!!

Please contact an animal charity, they will ensure they get a good home, and they usually only re-home kittens as pairs.

As an aside, I knew when you'd said no one wanted them they'd be black 😞

Good luck (and please consider reaching out to an animal rescue)

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 12/06/2023 14:43

I’d try a shelter too. I was lucky with my last cat it wasn’t via Gumtree but a local free ads site and I paid for him and luckily I think the owner saw I looked a good owner.

LacewingOrpington · 12/06/2023 14:47

Give the Bekind rescue. I’m sure they would help you find good homes.

SkySmiler · 12/06/2023 14:47

Thanks again everyone, I will definitely contact shelters now.

@catsnhats11 I know I thought that too, so sad, they're such handsome little chaps.

@EyelessArseFace It's such a worry, I adore them so much, will be hard enough to give them up

Stickytreacle · 12/06/2023 14:49

Please contact a reputable rescue, I have been in your situation twice after taking in desperately needy cats that were pregnant. Finding good homes was practically impossible to do properly, again the black moggy issue, but the rescues rehomed them within a week. Mine were timid too as mums were feral. I got photos of them in their lovely new home and was so pleased for them. Don't just give them to anyone out of desperation, it rarely ends well for them.

confusedlots · 12/06/2023 14:49

£100 seems an awful lot for a kitten, unless it's a sought after breed? I would have thought £20 or £30 would be more realistic?

MooMooSharoo · 12/06/2023 14:51

Not sure if it's a bit far, but try contacting Marjorie Nash cat rescue in Wycombe. They don't put the cats in catteries - they foster among volunteers so the foster carer gets to know them before rehoming.

We got our last cat from them and they were really particular about where they homed him.

They're definitely better off with a rescue place rather than a private ad, especially at a lower price. Some people buy cheap kittens for not very nice reasons...

Kitten prices have soared in recent years. You used to see them for £30 all the time, but not now.

My (rescue) cat cost me £65 from Marjorie Nash. He is a proper moggie and was given up at 6 months. The people before (in the pandemic) had paid over £300 for him as a kitten!

Supposedly was a mixed Norwegian Forest Cat... NFC my arse! He looks absolutely nothing like one!

CurlewKate · 12/06/2023 14:53

If you just want good homes, why are you charging £100?
