I’m s dog person, never had a cat before but not sure if I’ll get another dog.

they're placid and dopey things, generally speaking. as they're not overburdened with braincells they don't tend to flourish in the great outdoors.

ThreeLeggedCat · 16/05/2023 21:52

We have a cat who is 1/4 ragdoll. He is lovely but DIM.

Negpregpospreg · 16/05/2023 21:54

I’m interested in this! I’ve heard they’re lovely cats.

But to those in the know - do you have to have a litter tray if you have one? Or can they use the great outdoors?

orangeflags · 16/05/2023 21:59

We had one. It never went in the garden like the other cats. Had just no interest in going outside. He had a litter tray. Lovely dopey thing he was

I knew two rag doll x persians. Needed professional grooming monthly. Thick and floppy and benign.
Took beautiful photos.

Ours has a litter tray and won’t go outside, if he finds himself out there by mistake he freaks out. He’s currently walking round the room miaowing at inanimate objects. He’s very loving and gentle and massive and floppy.

ThisNameIsNotAvailable · 16/05/2023 22:02

Doesn’t need grooming but moults a lot

Irisheyesareshining · 16/05/2023 22:07

Prefers to be inside than out. Sleeps a lot !! I wouldn’t say mine is high on personality but she’s lovely all the same 😊

I'm currently cat sitting my daughter's she's gorgeous ❤️ big blue eyes in a dark muzzle, really chatty, plays fetch and just loves being where the people are. She comes running to the front door when she hears me arrive home. I'm a little bit obsessed by her I admit it.

My girl is utterly beautiful, very friendly and affectionate and playful.

She is also high maintenance and hates being left alone. She needs a lot of grooming and still manages to shed everywhere.

She is noy blessed with many brain cells and definitely can't go outside alone.

Oh what beautiful cats! But it’s the litter tray that puts me off. I’m a dog person rather than a cat person, but my whole family is desperate for a cat! But I can’t be doing with the killing of mice / birds etc. I also can’t be doing with the cat litter…

My daughter's has to be an indoor kitty, because of where she lives, so no wildlife will be harmed. She uses biodegradable cat litter and the tray only smells if it's not cleaned regularly

My mum had one and he was aloof , nice enough but really wasn’t that fussed about people aside from being fed . My son has Siamese and they are very dog like - play fetch , talk to you , run to the front door when you come in ( even if someone else is already in the house ). Fabulous character cats .

Hair-dusted owner of a Siberian here. They are also very dog like - she loves water and plays fetch. Is an indoor cat but goes outside on our deck with supervision.

Oriental cats (Siamese, Burmese, Ocicat etc) are good for dog lovers as they're usually a bit dog like - playful, chatty, clever - while being resourceful enough to go outside if you're not a fan of a litter tray. Ragdolls are gorgeous but a bit stupid.

Silkierabbit · 17/05/2023 02:56

We have a Maine Coon and he is quite dog like in some ways like fetches balls with his mouth. He is very gentle, very cuddly, loves attention, needs company all the time ideally and the happiest creature ever, trilling all the time. No threat to wildlife, needs to be indoor or catio or cat proof garden and does need litter tray. If everyone else wants the cat can't one of them do the litter tray? Now I think you can get self cleaning litter trays which only once a month or so need changing though not tried one. He's quite big 8kg and 1.1 metres and 3 years of growing, quite heavy when he sits on you.

What a gorgeous cat ❤️❤️

Our ragdoll is so full of love it's unreal..he always snuggles up to me & follows me like a puppy. He's definitely not daft as the others say..plus he's a much better hunter than my part feral boy! His blue eyes are stunning. He's MASSIVE as well! I never knew a cat could be so big!

A family member has rag dolls. One is extremely neurotic and prowls about like every step poses extreme danger the rest are all your average cat - explorers and fierce hunters. Only one is particularly friendly

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 17/05/2023 04:03

My ragdoll (rescue) is temperamental, bitey and has to have the last word. If she gets told off she'll slink off and then come flying out from under a piece of furniture and try to land as high up the body as she can jump. She's gone as far as trying to push me down the stairs a few times when she's annoyed at me.

She's definitely not stupid and placid like others have said on here. She likes to 'hunt' small soft toys and bring them to me. She went through a phase of bringing me one every time I was in the shower and waited until I came out to praise her.

She doesn't like my kids but tolerates them. If they cry she's first on the scene to make sure they're ok and if I haven't heard them she comes to get me.

She flops a lot and likes to do this with maximum trip potential and minimum notice.

She's an indoor cat due to ragdolls having no road sense. We had to sign a form when we got her to say we'd never let her out of the house.
She's very attached to my DP and runs to greet him whenever he comes home and sees him off to work. She gets attention from him by being nice but she's the opposite to me and bites me for attention.

Yes we have a litter tray but she rarely covers her mess up which I've heard is common in ragdolls.

I second PP suggesting Oriental type cats like Siamese or Balinese if you like dogs. DH was a dog person, completely uninterested in cats. Until he met me and my Siamese. When elderly Siamese gentleman died at the age of 18 we eventually got a Balinese (which is basically the long haired version). He 100% considers himself a cat person now. Because that type is like a dog but without the need to take on walks etc. They do require quite a lot of interaction/ attention though or they get bored and can get destructive (like a dog) so if you're out all day it's be worth getting 2 so they can play together

IheartNiles · 17/05/2023 06:35

Get a Burmese. Chunkier than Siamese if you like dogs and have very soft fur, the softest of all cats to stroke. Mine like to be thrown about, they play and are also total lap cats. They like going out, are capable outside (mine look left and right before crossing the road) and are fit and active but like to be around their people for much of the day.

Rainyrunway · 17/05/2023 06:40

I've never had a Burmese. Are they like Oriental cats in their personality?

Choconutty · 17/05/2023 06:43

I have 2 - boy and girl.

Girl is very pretty, needs daily brushing, boy is bigger, thicker fur (needs less frequent, but more thorough brushing).

Neither are particularly bright, although there's a certain amount of cunning (boy cat particularly is a cheeky one when it comes to other people's seats), Boy cat walks around the house yelling when he doesn't know where we/his sister is, whereas his sister mainly trills at us when she wants something (treat/brushing/to tell us her brother's shut outside)

Mine go outside, but I live in the middle of no-where.

I wouldn't describe mine as lap cats - affection is definitely on their terms (although frequently demanded) - they do like to hang out in the same room as me though, even if not on my lap.

Choconutty · 17/05/2023 06:47

I've just read up - yes! the flopping! Boy does that - preferably in the middle of the hall/doorway..

and neither of them cover their poo - although if it's good weather they'll go outside anyway (boy cat will even brave rain to - he prefers to go outdoors)

I wouldn't say they're great hunters - boy cat has caught things and brought them in, but then doesn't know what to do so I have to remove mice/birds (in varying levels of anger to death) from the house every now or then. Girl cat isn't as agile (I think all the floof) so I've only seen catch a bird once, and I immediately went out and made her put it back down.
