I've never had a Burmese. Are they like Oriental cats in their personality?

Very, very snuggly and needy. Much less chatty but more physically robust.

SaturdayGiraffe · 17/05/2023 12:36

Met a couple of Burmese recently. Very forward, confident, small boned. Delightful fur. Keen birders!

evtheria · 17/05/2023 12:44

Agreeing with PP on considering a Siamese if you want a cat with an extroverted personality. Ours was only half but oh my GOD she could talk - usually at high volume, plus loved to play fetch with a ball and sleep at the foot of the bed. She was also good at being outdoors, even after 2 big house moves, and understood "Stop".

Spot the rag doll from the Maine coon

I have a pure ragdoll cat. She is so so thick. Never known a cat like it. Extremely docile and has never scratched or bitten. She isn't a lap cat but she will follow me around and sleep outside my bedroom door.

Pip1402 · 17/05/2023 13:16

I have a ragdoll and he isn't stupid, just lacking any real killer instincts. I've taught him to play fetch and to give me a paw for a treat. He loves company and follows me around but is undemanding, he just likes to sit near me. He loves routine and comes for a cuddle every morning when I wake up.

We have a secure garden which he loves spending time in and has started using instead of his litter tray most of the time.

I've had several other cats over the years but he is like a different animal in terms of how gentle and interactive he is. He loves to play games like a dog would and can be picked up and cuddled whenever I want. He listens and learns when I say no to things and is utterly beautiful. I can't believe ragdolls are real and we're allowed to live with them.

Gigglemous · 17/05/2023 13:36

They are wonderful companions. So loving and affectionate. They melt in your hands, floppy as anything. Hair everywhere though.
They are placid as f and wouldn't survive outdoors.

MathiasBroucek · 17/05/2023 15:13

I am NOT a cat person but DW is. We've never had one as I'm allergic but I'm not allergic to ragdolls (long story).

Our radgoll is beyond adorable. VERY empathetic. If one of us is upset, she comes over and "kneeds" us. And when my DW was in bed with a migraine, the cat lay down on the bed AND DID NOT MOVE ALL DAY!!!

Surprised that people say they're not bright - ours is good at problem solving (sadly).

She loves to play - chase games, "fetch" and "find daddy" which is hide and seek (but with her always doing the seeking)

Have to say I'm a fan. Like a dog but sweet-smelling and no need for walkies!

LT2 · 17/05/2023 15:23

We have 2. They follow us everywhere. One is more clingy than the other! He's on me now, almost fighting over my lap with the toddler. They are lovely cats but don't fare well outdoors, so think about whether you actually want a housecat, litter trays.. consider a catio.

MagicSpring · 17/05/2023 15:30

I'm allergic but I'm not allergic to ragdolls

Hmm, our long-fluffed moggy from a cat rescue doesn't set off DH's asthma, whereas every other cat we've had has done so. I wonder whether it's the longer fur or something else that determines this?

poppetandmog · 17/05/2023 15:46

We have two ragdolls - a boy and a girl. They are quite different but are generally are very docile cats. However they have zero road sense and need to be kept inside for their own safety.

Our boy is like a dog. He follows us around and chats to us. He wants to be with us all the time and is more like a dog than a cat. But he is quite stupid, although very entertaining!

Our girl is more intelligent and extremely intuitive - she knows when you're poorly or sad and will come and sit beside you. She is a bit more feisty though and only wants petted on her terms.

They are both amazing and I wouldn't have any other type of cat now.

They don't have an "undercoat" which helps. Although I think there are other breeds that are "hypoallergenic"

SilentParrot · 16/05/2023 16:43

they're placid and dopey things, generally speaking. as they're not overburdened with braincells they don't tend to flourish in the great outdoors.

Same applies to Persians, who are also a fab breed.

musixa · 17/05/2023 17:58

Shamelessly joining for cat pics.

I knew two rag doll x persians. Needed professional grooming monthly. Thick and floppy and benign.
Took beautiful photos.

Taking beautiful photos is right, our ragdoll is so photogenic😻

My only cat is a ragdoll but a rescue so she has her issues🤣 She is dim, devoted and always wants us near but hates being picked up and is not a lapcat. She is vocal and wakes me up to come and watch her eat breakfast. DH feeds her but she is especially bonded to me and does follow me around.

Ours has a litter tray but does go outside, just comes in for the loo🤣 She doesn’t go far but loves it.

She does an excellent job of grooming her glorious mane but occasionally gets poo stuck in her bum hair and that’s a 2 person job to remove it! I scoop and hold dh removes with tissue or I need the blunt ended scissors if it’s really bad.

I do adore her and the breed but as she’s an ex breeding queen and had a rough life, I can’t bring myself to contribute to the practice of breeding pedigrees so I’m unlikely to have another pedigree cat.

Doyouthinktheyknow · 17/05/2023 18:24

This is mine. Bizarrely she claimed a drinks coaster and sat on it. It’s literally under her tummy like she is incubating it🤣🤣

My girl gets a regular rim trim to stop the poo problem. It's a delicate job which requires one person to hold her and the other person to delicately cut the hair around her bum!

I tried the hygiene trim but she is a wriggly little pickle and I really couldn’t get close enough to make a difference🤣

DH and I are a well oiled machine now, she did it last night and from scooping her up to removing the poo took about 10 seconds. It should be an Olympic sport😻

Last year, DH had emergency surgery and the day after he came home from hospital, completely incapacitated, dcat had a bad poo problem and scraped her arse all along my bedroom carpet trying to clear it. I had to scoop and clean her all by myself, was not a maneuver Dcat or I ever want to repeat, neither of us enjoyed that🤣

Ours LOVES sitting or lying on hard things - TV remote, hoover attachments, hair brush…

Oreosareawful · 19/05/2023 13:29

I've got four full ragdolls and can't bring myself to have any other breed. They are loved as much as my children.
I think they are very dog like- they follow me around the house, greet us at the door when we come home, very empathetic, playful, will play fetch etc. They sleep on our bed with us and are very much part of the family- not at all aloof.
They can definitely be a bit dim, but that just makes them more lovable.

I wholeheartedly disagree with the poster that stated the don't need grooming- they absolutely do, especially as they get older and less flexible.

@Jomummy1013 so jealous!! This is my dream kind of kitten😻
Me and my children went to a cat cafe a few times and none of us had an allergic reaction.
Does anyone know if it's enough for my husband to spend half an hour with the kittens at the breeder's to find out if he's allergic or not?

ashamed1235 · 20/05/2023 14:39

I’ve always had moggies but then I got addicted to ragdolls … I have three.
They are large, floppy, very affectionate and dog like in that they want to be with you all the time, and follow you around. Come and meet us at the door if we’ve been out. They all sleep on our bed at night, fortunately it’s a superking. Gorgeous to stroke and v peaceful.

Downsides - not well endowed with brains - but very able to communicate their needs nonetheless! Wouldn’t feel safe letting them out so we turned our side return into a sort of catio. So litter trays but they are very clean and cover so it’s not really a problem. If we go away, we have a pet sitter to come and stay whereas with moggies the neighbour would pop in and feed them. They wouldn’t manage that. However, we have a god dog too so a pet sitter works well for them all.

Wouldn’t be without them.

@ashamed1235 absolutely gorgeous!
The more I read about them, the more desperate I get to have one (or two or three).
