Litter sticking to old kidney cat's feet

Hi everyone I am after any advice to help make our lovely old boy more comfortable in his (probably) last few months. He's a grey short hair, very pretty, 18 years old. He's got chronic kidney disease, a heart murmur and is blind though you wouldn't know it, he gets around fine. He's become more thin and frail over the last few months and the vet advised us to make sure he is drinking lots so he doesn't get dehydrated. Sure enough, he does huge wees - we use clumping litter so can see the size of them! But, poor thing, the litter is sticking to his 2 back paws and he doesn't aporeciate our efforts to either pull or wash it off. Any advice on how to get it off and whether a different type of litter might help? He's not eating much but demands fresh chicken when he does feel peckish, and still enjoys his cuddles with his trademark big purr, so we don't think he's ready to go yet.

Stop using clumping litter.
There's one made with shredded paper which might be softer on the paws.

We have the woodchip litter and that doesn't stick. It just turns to powder really.
