Our 13 year old cat was very ill for 12 days: eating less than half her rations, holding herself stiffly and keeping a distance from us, developed head and paw tremors, unable to settle and sometimes moving around restlessly, sometimes stumbled as she became weaker. We have a very close bond with her and she was clearly telling us she was in great discomfort.
The vet put her on Metacam and did two blood tests at intervals which showed slightly lower white cells and platelets, but not bad enough to base a diagnosis on. No sign of infection, physical exam and temperature normal. Next was an abdominal ultrasound which was normal, and X rays to check for physical injury which were normal (he had noticed a slight resistance in one of her legs). She had anaesthetic for the latter, and didn’t eat at all the next day. The following day she was at least hungry and ate reasonably well. Then she had 24 hrs of vomiting and diarrhoea. We were seriously worrying about how long we could leave her in this distress, without a diagnosis or treatment. Then the following day when we woke up and went through to her, she was completely back to her normal self ! Extremely friendly, loving, hungry, interacting with us completely normally ! She has remained so, everything is back to normal, and we are so happy !
It is still worrying us that we don’t know what happened, currently assuming it was a virus ? Imagine a bug would have cause signs of an infection with her blood test and temperature? She is very much an indoor cat at this time of year and only comes outside with me, so I would have noticed if she ate anything strange or had an accident.
Posting to see if anyone has had a similar experience … a cat being so ill for so long and then magically recovering. If so did you have any clues as to what had been going on ? Very much want to avoid it happening again. Thanks.
