Is my cat overweight, so how much wet food am I supposed to give her?

Newish cat owner, but I have always fed her half a pouch of the Sainsbury's wet food in jelly, twice a day amd a couple of scoops.of Scrumbles.

Since she's been in our car however, dh has commented that dcat is getting podgy. ☹️

Having weighed myself holding tha cat before and after, I guess she is around 5kg.

dh bought some tinned cat food in gravy A few weeks ago, but I tend to stick with thw Sainsbury's stuff. As dh fed her this morning with the Lidl tinned food, we'll carry on until it's finished.

Now, I have read up on how much food to give a day but some sites say 60g, some say 40g and the tin says 1 tin lasts a day. It's 400g and looks way too much just for a day.

So, how much tinned wet food should I be giving a cat of 5k?

Thanks if you've managed to get this far!

There is generally a feeding guide on the side of the box. Sainsburys say for 5kg cat (to maintain weight) 3-3.5 pouches BUT says to adjust amount to keep your cat lean (& you would obviously need to reduce if feeding biscuits as well.) If you are giving any treats then reduce further.
If you cat is getting large start reducing biscuits and play with it more so it burns off calories maybe? Some cats are more active than others, some need a bit of encouragement!

My cat is under 4 kg but does have 2 pouches and a small spoonful of biscuits each day. She doesn’t empty her bowl completely most days though.

Thanks. I had read the side, but 3 pouches seemed a lot to me as we give her dry food too.

I do try to encourage cat to go out a bit more and we have a DIY fishing rod which weve had sone success with. I think Ill treat her to a new toy and start reduce portions.

I used to give my cat 1 pouch of wet food in the evening and the rest of the time he had plenty of biscuits down. At his vet checks the vet said he was a perfect weight and that many cats nowadays are overweight, he was an active cat though so I guess it depends on how active your cats are, most cats probably don’t need more than 1 pouch a day alongside biscuits.

Elieza · 31/03/2023 16:09

Mind there are different sizes of pouches, some are large and some are small. So if comparing make sure it’s like for like.

My cat was 4.5kg and had a small Sheba three times a day with as many biscuits and water as she wanted. And dreamies.

I had a vet check annually and she was just right. But every cat is different. Males are bigger.

As mine got older into her teens she developed what appeared to be a fat tummy that hung down. However it was actually mostly just empty sagging fur. So she looked fat but wasn’t!

as they get from kitten into cat they tend to fill out a bit anyway. So it could even be just that.

You do know you now need to post a pic of dcat??!! It’s the law!

Our boy is a big cat, he was 6.5kg lost weight and is now about 5.25 kg. He has 1 pouch a day (split morning and evening and the equivalent of 2/3 of a small Nutella jar (the ones that can double as a small drinking glass) of biscuits. They are a complete dry food biscuits. The biscuit cup is marked up with a piece of tape so we don't give him too many. He probably gets one small handful of dreamies a day too. Weigh the dry food, most packets have a feeding guide on them. It always surprises me how few biscuits you get for the weight but worth doing so you don't inadvertently over feed.

Tdcp · 31/03/2023 16:14

I leave biscuits down all the time for mine and give them around a sachet of wet each a day or less. Any more and they leave it to go manky. The vet said they're in prime condition which was nice to hear as I thought my fluffy one was podgy 😅

imnotthatkindofmum · 31/03/2023 16:18

My cat is small and lean she has 1 pouch and a handful of biscuits each day plus a few dreamies in the evening.

I'm lucky in that she never over eats so I know she's getting the right amount!

Cazs818 · 31/03/2023 16:27

I fed my two half a pouch and small toddler cup of biscuits , twice a day . Both of mine are ideal weight according to the vet

tvbed · 31/03/2023 16:52

How old is your cat. I have a boy who ballooned up but then grew into it and now appears to be a good weight. I wondered if he naturally gained over winter and lost as the weather got better. He has half a pouch morning and evening. He also has access to dry food pretty much all day but doesn't like it nearly as much so only seems to eat it if hungry.

How can we judge without pics op?

Shannith · 31/03/2023 16:55

Just checking she's spayed...

xsquared · 31/03/2023 17:09

Hi everyone,

Thank you for the replies. I have included photos. 😊

Cat is 5 years, 6 in June.

She is spayed.

The thing that makes me think that dh might be right is that she has a tuft of fur on her tummy, which may be fat. I note that a pp had the same ams that it was sagging fur.

The tuft of fur on the tummy is called a primordial pouch. We have twin cats. One has a very big pouch, the other not so much. At their last check up the vet said they were a bit overweight so we checked just how much we were feeding them.
Now they have 1 Felix As good As it Looks pouch each at tea time, and 1 scoop of complete dried food. No more Dreamies! They have lost a little weight I think, and don’t seem to be starving! The vet said things like Dreamies are the worst thing to give them if you don’t cut down on the portion sizes of their meals.

Elieza · 31/03/2023 19:37

I don’t think she looks fat. She looks lovely.

PS If I stand on all fours and look in a mirror I have a pouch hanging down at my tummy so I’m not saying anything about pouches…!!

Bunnyhascovidnoteggs · 31/03/2023 19:57

Yabu to body shame that purrfect beauty op...

Thank you. She really is beautiful.

I am annoyed at dh calling her podgy, because as a result, I have gone down a rabbit hole of cat obesity, what to do to exercise her, toys etc.

She looks fine to me.

The hanging fur on their bellies is called a primordial pouch and is perfectly normal. It doesn't mean your cat is fat!
