I am going to view a one year old cat in her foster home today, with me luck, I don’t know what to expect, she looks adorable in her photo and I’ve fallen for her with out even meeting her, I will be so disappointed if I don’t het to give her a home. Any advice please.
I need a companion to cuddle

Best of luck OP! So she's being fostered now and this is with a view to you adopting, is that right?
When will you know, who decides?

It's a charity. Sheffield Cats Shelter
I'm so excited so I really would like to adopt her

How did it go?

RockhoppersLovePoppers · 20/03/2023 09:34

I'll need to see the cat 😻

Hoping your signing the paperwork !

I realise that this advice is coming too late but my advice is this:

remember it is not about the looks and appeal of the cat - all kittens are lovely and a 1yo cat is also going to be adorable and of course if you are a cat person you have the capacity to fall in love with almost any cat.

When we were adopting kittens we had to remind ourselves of this. all kittens are cute. this is not a cuteness check. the first litter of kittens we went to see were being rescued from a situation where it was clear that the kittens were the result of several generations of inbreeding within a very small gene pool and there was evidence of resulting genetic problems. lovely and cute, but an investment of a lifetime if complicated vet bills.

find out what you can about the parentage (often unknowable) and how much time the cat had with mum and siblings (social problems/biting/not knowing to keep claws polite when playing can all be problems for cats that were solo from very early)

Congratulations OP. Don't worry if it takes her a while to settle, she might hide for a few days, just be patient and give her time and space and she'll make friends with you before too long. My foster cats are being adopted today, I'm going to miss them but am sure their new humans will give them all the love and care they deserve. The humans came for a home visit and were so sweetly keen and nervous. They fell in love with these two who I've had for a couple of months and nursed through a horrible bout of cat flu. Happy endings all round..

@vickibee

I'm a cat fosterer. We are sad when they go to their forever home, but that's what we want, we can't keep them all.

I've fostered over a hundred cats and kittens now (I have a book where I keep details of each one, eg little kittens need weighing regularly to check they're gaining weight properly so I write this in the book) and have 'only' kept 3 and I'm trying to be strict about not keeping any more but every so often one comes along, usually with a really endearing personality, that I think 'I could keep you and will really miss you' but I'm sticking to it and, when they do get rehomed, the rescue usually brings more to us to foster, so it's often a never ending supply of kittens, which is adorable, but also sad that there's never a shortage of cats and kittens that need rescuing, and kittens can be hard work and destructive to clothes, furnishings etc.

It is difficult, but it’s wonderful when you get updates from the parents & see how happy the cats are in their new homes.

I’m going to collect her tomorrow. Just waiting on my pet carrier from Amazon delivery due today
I hope she can be happy with us, my son is autistic and loves animals so I’m hoping she will give positive vibes to him too
the only snag is her name is Vera , will she be able to learn a new name? I could call her VEE

She's lovely!

In my experience, they easily learn a new name. Once the cat is settled in, say the new name as you feed a treat and repeat multiple times; then call the cat from a short distance for the treat and she should come; also call the cat whenever you feed her so she associates the new name with nice things.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 21/03/2023 09:51

Just to say OP that she looks gorgeous. Congratulations.

And DesolationRow your two fosters are wonderful. 😁

vickibee · 21/03/2023 12:07

Thank you all, I’m so excited.

Oh, I think Vera is a lovely name for a cat. I wouldn't change it. I think they respond to voices that they know, not necessarily names anyway. Or the rustle of a Dreamies packet.

I give lots of mine 'old lady/man' names. One of our adoptees said she picked the cat I was fostering off our website because her name was the same as her DGM who'd sadly died a couple of years ago and she saw it as a sign.

Bunnyhascovidnoteggs · 21/03/2023 12:19

My dgm was Vera. The best woman I have ever known. She would have loved a dcat named after her!

Turnipworkharder · 21/03/2023 12:21

she has beautiful markings.

EachandEveryone · 21/03/2023 16:43

I love the name Vera!

RockhoppersLovePoppers · 23/03/2023 08:29

How's she getting on??? 😻
