How do I get my cat to use a litter box from a tray?

Our cat is 4 and up until now we've had an open tray but we've recently bought a litter box to be a little more hygienic.
She uses it with the top off at the moment but whenever we've put the top on (without the flap) she goes beside it.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

I pegged the door open whilst going through this phase. The door eventually broke though so she now has a box with no door!

Maybe they don't like feeling enclosed. We always had an open tray with high sides.

Ours use a tray that doesn’t have a lid. We use wood pellets as litter and it’s good at absorbing odours.

If it’s important to you to have a tray with a lid, perhaps you could you try getting them used to higher sides first…

Tape some cardboard around 3 sides, then after a few weeks try again with lid?
