Need unusual cat food - pork, kangaroo, crocodile?

My vet wants us to try a totally new type of protein for my boy to see if his skin condition is caused by food. The trouble is he's had pretty much every kind of meat and fish on the shelves (even the one made of insects), so I need to find something really out there. Do you know of any weird cat food I can try? Looking for both wet and dry food.

My rescue cat had a skin condition and the vet put him on a grain free diet. He adores prawns with a passion (occasional treat I can't afford to keep him on an exclusive prawn free diet). However he also eats Encore Tuna with Shrimp. He also eats Crave biscuits and he's never had a skin relapse.

I have a cat with similar skin issues from allergies.

At the stage you're at, we got a huge bag of hypoallergenic cat biscuits (the proteins are broken down so small they don't cause an allergic reaction) for her main diet, then cooked a little bit of meat for her each night for a nice tea.

We started with venison at the vet's suggestion but then discovered we could get goat meat much cheaper. Both were novel proteins for her. We also gave her plain, steamed white fish sometimes as the vet said this was highly unlikely to be an allergen.

Her skin calmed down and we got a full allergy test done. It turned out she's mostly allergic to beef and dairy so we've moved back to cat food with all named ingredients (so no 'meat and animal derivatives', 'animal fat' etc.)

She still gets an occasional flare up (she's allergic to several tree pollens among other things), it usually settles down in a few days but occasionally she has a short course of steroids. The vet is wary of prescribing these too often or for too long.

Could you cook for him? Fresh meat and fish might be heaps better than processed tinned stuff.

Fwiw our cat has horrendous skin and it turned out it was some sort of pollen allergy and she gets an injection twice a year which stops it. She scratched herself raw poor baby.

I can find out the name of the injection if you haven't ruled out pollen?

I'd be interested in the pollen allergy injection if you can remember what it's called.

Ok I will ask vet tomorrow

Purizon dry food, from zooplus, has some slightly out-there flavours and my VERY fussy pair love it. I think, however, you’re going to struggle to find a commercially produced completely new protein that’s 100% that protein with no added meat fillers. Has the vet any recommendations?

She gave me a list but the only thing on it he hasn't eaten was crocodile, and I can't find any crocodile cat food. I did find some very expensive crocodile meat, but then I'd have the problem of adding other things to make sure he has a complete diet. She wants him on a completely new protein for six weeks, which is a long time if I get it wrong and he ends up deficient. Sad

I found some 100% pork/ham wet and dry food, so I'm going to see if he'll eat it. Here in case anybody else is in this situation:

If not I found a brand of kangaroo, but it seems to be only available in a £40 multipack, which is a lot if he won't eat it. But if he won't eat the pork this is next to try. www.zooplus.com/shop/cats/canned_cat_food_pouches/catz_finefood/catz_finefood_cans/682480

From dad:

Hi, I can’t remember the name of the injection. It wasn’t having much success with Charley’s allergy so now she is on a daily dose of steroids called Prednisolone.

Sorry guys I didn't realise she had moved onto steroids now. When we got our rescue dog, my cat packed her bags and moved in with my dad next door so he has her!

whattodo2019 · 08/03/2023 20:41

Have you looked at raw cat food?

Cisma nature from zooplus is great. Just pure meat in a tin with natural broth. My cat loves it. All sorts of different varieties Op.

Aw, thanks for asking. Hope she's doing well on the steroids.

OP, this sounds like a nightmare. It would be worth asking the vet if you can use hypoallergenic biscuits.

When we had to do this I understood that the purpose was not to introduce novel proteins as such, but to remove any proteins DCat had already had and which might have set off the allergic reaction. Then if her skin cleared up we could assume that something in her usual diet was the problem.

You can do this just as well and much easier with hypoallergenic dry food (you can also get hypoallergenic wet food but it costs £££ and is revolting). We only cooked her little poshmeat teas because she's spoilt, she'd have been fine on just the biscuits.

Another one saying why are you not trialing hydrolysed diet my cats skin allergy (atopy) is totally control on Purina HA she hasn't had a flare since 2018 on it. She also loves it demanding her food twice a day.

CatJumperTwat · 10/03/2023 11:39

He likes the ham mousse, phew. Whether he'll be happy to eat it nonstop for six weeks is another matter, but we'll see how it goes.

I think Bozita from zooplus comes in some unusual flavours, you could try that. Otherwise second Katkin, it's the only food that my tom cat with a very sensitive stomach can eat.

Bozita is mixed meat. Most are unless you specifically search for single protein foods which are the only way to sort out an allergy or reaction.
Zooplus have some but you will need to be careful and read all the ingredients. Generally German made foods are better for this, although some of the shredded ones like Blink might (not saying for sure as I haven't checked) might be suitable.
I am working on the basis that you have been feeding food that looks as if it is one type or protein but it is in reality the main one and contains other meats.

MrsWojadobakowsky · 13/03/2023 14:07

Be careful with the Cosma, Almo, Applaws etc. as it is often not complete food. You really need to check all the details.
