Talk to me about budget cat litter

Catsan has gone up to £15 for a 20l bag it's shot up in the last month

Please can you recommend something similar for a budget? We have their tray in a cupboard in our lounge (we are tight on space) so it's important that it's fairly decent so there isn't a smell

I would really, really appreciate your recommendations. We spend a fortune on the stuff already it's such a pain.

Pets at home ultra clumping (comes in a purple box) is the best I've found. Beats wood pellet and non clumping types hands down!

NotHooray · 21/02/2023 22:01

Sorry meant to add it's £10 a box but because it's so good at clumping if you remove the urine and poos the rest of the litter remains fresh smelling and clean and with top ups here and there, a box will last a while

Following and bumping with interest as the 10l bag has gone up to £9! Finally a litter that daft DCat doesn't try and eat, but I'd love to find a non smelly budget alternative too.

Also the felight litter freshener granules are good for in between full changes to keep it frwshc

But what about when they poo on the inside wall of the litter box - I find I have to dump it all out so that I can clean the actual box. Am I missing something?

I tried Franks from Sainburys this week, £2 for 10 litres. It's not the best but it's not terrible. A bit odd though in that it seems to form almost into actual clay when wee'd on which I've not seen before.

NotHooray · 21/02/2023 22:16

@Dotcheck ah that might make things more difficult! Fortunately my two reliably poo within the litter so I haven't had to deal with that annoyance! Have you tried an enclosed tray?

CornedBeef451 · 21/02/2023 22:19

I used the incredibly cheap Tesco own brand and just changed it frequently. I think it's £4 for a huge bag.

Whycanineverever · 21/02/2023 22:21

Sainsburys have a new pink bag similar to catsan. Not quite as good though.

Cannot remember name of make

It is enclosed and she manages to poo up the side!
I suspected she was gifted at being awkward!

We pay £30 for 60l of Greenwoods litter from ZooPlus.

Lasts about two months with three indoor cats - so 50p a day.

HotSauceCommittee · 22/02/2023 08:44

I just use Aldi or Lidl cat litter. Around £2 for 10kg. It clumps into clay, does the job fine.

Chimna · 22/02/2023 08:46

I've always just used the basic supermarket own brand. Change every few days.

Whiteminnowfish · 22/02/2023 08:50

I've tried quite a few and find the Aldi brand really good. No smell and clumps. Its £1.98 a bag

Caspianberg · 22/02/2023 08:57

Cats best universal is around £13 for 20l on zooplus.

when ours were kittens and we used cats best daily it’s really lasts ages as you can just scoop the poop out and the pee makes small sawdust piles you can easily scoop also. So you aren’t emptying every time. We used to scoop daily/ every time they went, and empty tray only once a week on average. Needs a decent layer, but not full full. Don’t add newspaper or any liner under as that will get dirty and can’t be scooped out.

If they poop on side, do you have a litter tray with sides where you can just remove the top? Then you can remove and wash the top and sides easily without fully emptying every time

Scarecrowrowboat · 22/02/2023 10:20

There's no smell in our living room and we use the Tesco lightweight cat litter at £1.95 10l
