Unwanted cat

Hi. How can I give away a cat I rescued? It is not working out. I really need the cat gone to somewhere happier. The rescue have said the cat can be rehomed but seems to be a long waiting lost. Is there no other option? It is a senior cat. Timid.

I honestly think the kindest thing would be vet first thing tomorrow and PTS. A new home is going to be (at best) several months of hiding again, but this time with health issues which must be miserable. I completely understand why you don't want it anymore but you must face up to your responsibility as the current owner - an old, sick animal can't just be shunted from one home to another.

No she hasn't taken the cat to the vets otherwise she would have given us an update. Weekend rates are very expensive you know. 🤦‍♀️🙄

Especially when you've let the insurance lapse because you've been meaning to return the unwanted item.

Scum.

@Catdilema hello. could you please give an update on the cat? We are clearly all animal lovers and just concerned for the poor girls health. I am not thinking bad of you but please just one update on her situation now?

This is so sad, poor girl (the cat). It made me so sad to read her owner had died and then the family put her outside in the garden. Really hope you’ve managed to get her to a vet OP. In the meantime, I don’t know if you’ve used them, but a feliway plug in might help her feel less stressed.

FWIW, I remember when my youngest cat (now 10m old) had a bout of diarrhoea. The first time, it was a few days after I got him. Got him checked over by the OOH vet (typically I spotted it on an evening!) and given the all clear. Few weeks later, he had another bout but this time with some blood. Straight to vet again (so well worth getting checked out quick!) and they trialled him on new food, gave him some meds and took stool samples. I don’t think I spent more than £400 - he does have insurance (the top level one - all my cats do), but I wanted to keep that for (heaven forbid) any massive issues, so I try to put aside a little bit to cover any smaller vet bills, if that makes sense. He’s doing great now.

I’m sure that, most of the time, these types of threads are started by people who just want to wind up pet lovers. It’s a very easy target audience for bored idiots.

And they usually end up with a “flounce” from the OP.

Hi @C2190 @TicTac80 . The cat has gone to a foster owner via a cat rehoming centre now so a new permanent home can be found for her. We were sad to see her go. We had begun to bond. My friend (cat/dog owner) advised that I could wait a day or two to see if her stomach settled and it did so I did not take her to the vet. I am sure she will be well cared for now. Yes, I don't think I am cut out for pets so won't get anymore.

Thanks for updating us op

RaisinRainbow · 05/02/2023 22:01

For what it's worth, I think the rehoming centre made a mistake in this rehoming.

Op sounds to be an inexperienced owner, and rehoming a 15 year old cat requires a lot more sensitivity, consideration and the cat should ideally go to an experienced and patient owner, with some thought as to provisioning the inevitable care costs - ideally 6 monthly checkups.

That cat most likely had kidney disease or similar health issues.

keepaweatheredeye · 05/02/2023 22:06

A vet isn't a cat A&E. It's an animal doctor. If you were shitting blood you'd take yourself to the doctor, OP.

Hoping the poor cat gets a forever home.

I agree. I think somewhere OP said it was Cats Protection, unfortunately a lot of branches of both CPL and RSPCA are known for rehoming cats and dogs wherever they can as fast as possible as they just have so many animals they need the space. I know two families who had dogs from RSPCA who were supposedly child friendly, and turned out to be totally unsafe around children.

Allergictoironing · 06/02/2023 10:26

Thank you for the update OP, very pleased to see the cat has recovered a bit. I think you have done the right thing here, and hope that both you and the cat will be happy going forwards. If for any reason in the future you do decide to get another pet of whatever type please research it fully beforehand, not just basic care but potential problems & illnesses - not that I think (and you seem to agree) that pet ownership is for you.

BigotSpigot · 06/02/2023 10:34

MermaidEyes we rehomed a dog from the RSPCA years ago that had a long list of major health issues that had clearly not been treated and none of which had been communicated to us. It took a full year to get him back on his feet, but we were lucky that we had the time and resources to do it.

That's really not good on their part, but not surprising. Your dog is obviously a lucky dog choosing you!
