Unwanted cat

Hi. How can I give away a cat I rescued? It is not working out. I really need the cat gone to somewhere happier. The rescue have said the cat can be rehomed but seems to be a long waiting lost. Is there no other option? It is a senior cat. Timid.

Blood in bowel movement is not an A&E situation for humans 😳

Did I just read this??? OP- you are not referring to an adult, 80kg human, you are referring to a 15yr old, elderly, 4-5kg cat! Its been vomiting and has bloody stool. Have you not seen a vet yet??? Please get it help tonight for the sake of the poor cat!

Villagetoraiseachild · 28/01/2023 00:02

If money is an issue Op, there may be a PDSA near you, who would treat this cat for a donation.
Im really concerned that the rescue wont take the cat back as obviously the cat is very stressed/unwell/unhappy.
Tho it did sound like you were making progress.
It's very sad.
I hope the cat gets well and a more suitable home can be found.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 28/01/2023 00:03

Oh gosh, OP, regardless of the ongoing situation this poor cat needs to get to the vet as a matter of urgency.

Livinghappy · 28/01/2023 00:08

Op, did she get checked by a vet before rehousing?

Hiding, being sick and bloody poo does suggest serious illness, especially if she is 15. Please take her to a vet. An initial consultation will not be too expensive

Do you have money worries?

Thank you for the constructive posts and messages.

Blood in bowel movement is not an A&E situation for humans. It can be because of excessive straining for example. She is fine in herself. I think leaving it for a day is fine to check it is something serious. I can see from this evening's episode that it is.

I cannot see what else in my post suggests she is very unwell. She has been sick a few times. The last cat I looked after was ocassionaly sick too. I can see now with the blood it is possibly linked.

Hiding for 20 hours a day, vomiting, pooing and weeing outside of the litter tray and now passing watery, bloody diarrhoea are all HUGE red flags in an elderly cat.

Cats typically do not show you that they are unwell until they are very sick indeed.

Jux · 28/01/2023 00:15

Yes, do get the poor old lady to vet as soon as you can.

You've had her a few months and she is just beginning to trust you, letting you stroke her. It sounds to me like she was used to an elderly owner who lived a comparatively quiet life. I don't know what your life is like, but she has obviously found the change quite hard. But she's beginning to trust you so this could be the start of a lovely relationship in her twilight years. Some cats take longer than others to adjust.

Catdilema · 28/01/2023 00:20

I will take her to vet tomorrow.

I was told / understood the hiding was due to shyness and peeing was to mark territory and as sign of distress. She has become less shy with us.

I think the abnormal stool today/yday and vomiting yesterday is new/separate issue.

I am worried about money due to lack of insurance and cost of any treatment but I am not avoiding vet due to that or anything. Its only the stool that has alerted me something isnt OK. Vet for Cats Protection marked her as OK so perhaps this is just bad luck. The last cat I cared for was old and very well and social.

I am going to bed now.

Thank you again for hepful comments.

Have you got cat to vet yet? Please hurry. It might not be expensive.

Catdilema · 28/01/2023 00:23

P.S. Apparently her owner died. The owners family couldnt look after her as their dog did not like her. They put her in the garden for while but then... something ... not sure about details.. they gave her up.

You have my sympathy, as does your cat. I think there is a time when the kindest thing is to PTS. Elderly cats to do not take kindly to being rehomed and that is not your fault. To my mind that is either the fault of the Rescue and the person who left the poor animal with them.

Given that the owner died I hardly think she can be blamed for the cat being sent to a rescue

C2190 · 28/01/2023 00:33

What made you get the cat in the first place? I'm sure you're doing the best you can for her but rehoming an animal needs some serious thought of unconditional love and looking after. Take her to a vet ASAP. Praying she's ok, poor soul

thisusernameisnotavailablepleasetryanother · 28/01/2023 00:38

You're going to bed without even calling a vet for professional advice??
I can not believe you could be so cruel!!!
I bet you sleep well

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 28/01/2023 00:54

😢

ofwarren · 28/01/2023 01:03

I'd be absolutely frantic if one of mine was pooing blood!
I can't believe you are just going to bed 😧

Nsky62 · 28/01/2023 01:05

She needs help, she is very unwell, poor cat, take her asap, vet bills are your responsibility!
like it or not

WetBandits · 28/01/2023 01:20

I’ve just read your posts again and the thing that’s shocked me the most is that your OP doesn’t even mention that she’s unwell, just that “it’s not working out and you really need it gone” Sad

Then you say you’re upset that you’re having to clean up after her, but not that you’re upset for her that she’s poorly. I’d be beside myself if any of mine were this sick.

You don’t seem to know a single thing about how to look after a cat, you’ve decided that we’re all ‘being dramatic’ and that there’s no emergency. Now you’re just going to bed, leaving her to suffer?

It’s pretty clear where your priorities lie.

MakingTheVeganYorkshirePud · 28/01/2023 01:22

You do seem to be concerned about this cat, so please do take to the vets. I'd also be calling the rescue where you got her from to say it isn't working and they need to act ASAP.

I'd also not bother getting another rescue, or buying an other animal, if I were you OP. All of them need time and patience, and they are likely to be a financial burden, both insurance wise and in terms of destruction of furniture.

Hope the cat ends up with a loving home.

Igotthegoose · 28/01/2023 01:54

I know you have just compared a cat to a human but this is really not the case OP. We are not the same. A cat with bloody diarrhoea sounds seriously ill.

When you decide to adopt you take a life in to your own hands, and she is now your responsibility. Not getting this poor baby to the vet is a cruel judgement on your part. The cat needs medical attention and the poor thing sounds like she’s been though so much stress already.

Please take her as soon as possible, if you are so concerned about money and whatever drop her off anonymously at the RSPCA or somewhere for someone to look after her, it is a horrible thing to do but it’s better to leave somewhere where she can get the medical attention she needs and deserves than it is the alternative.

RockingAmadeus · 28/01/2023 03:38

Shame on you

MaoamAddict · 28/01/2023 04:20

Take the cat to the vets and PTS. At 15, she's not going to want invasive medical assessments, you're worried about money and there's no capacity for the rescue to rehome her. But take her ASAP!

WildFlowerBees · 28/01/2023 04:29

Please take your cat to the vet. Please do not have any animal again.

Princesspollyyy · 28/01/2023 04:30

Shame on you. Please don't have any more pets.

You can't equate cat health to human health, they are very different both anatomically and physiologically e.g. cats need taurine in their diet which humans don't, cats are quadrupedal which leads to big structural differences especially around the pelvis.

I get piles, and I know when I have a little bit of blood in my poo it's that. But unless you've seen her straining away for ages then failing to poo (which in itself is an emergency for pets) then it wouldn't be that.

A cat who is a) vomiting more than usual and b) has blood in their poo most definitely NOT fine in any way.

Now a huge bloody diahhroea on my bed - and how the FUCK can you not class that as an emergency? One minute you're saying the blood may be due to having to strain a bit, then you get exactly the opposite???

Yes I suppose you do have the excuse of ignorance regarding cats (though you should have learned a bit more before adopting) and came on here to get advice, but you have been given that advice and ignored it. I was sort of understanding your PoV until you said "I cannot see what else in my post suggests she is very unwell" - we've already TOLD you those symptoms are serious.. The blood in her poo started yesterday - that's when you should have been on here asking rather than assuming that if it's OK in humans then it is in cats.

I don't normally go into full blown rant on here, but I was looking forward to a day of cossetting my dying cat before he gets PTS in the next couple of weeks and come on to read a post by someone who not only is ignorant about their own pet, but then refutes the advice they've been given by experienced cat people.😡
